that reminds me of the end of Dumb and Dumber when harry rips open his shirt to reveal the bullet proof vest and lloyd says "what if he shot you in the head?"

i guess we dont always think about these things first!!

Regarding the socialised health care questions:

It's not about whether either system is a good one.  Socialized medicine is great because everyone receives coverage and care.  Mediocre care at best.

Private medicine is great because if you have the money, they can do just about anything.  Also, money is the great driver that fuels the engine of innovation and discovery.  So, people keep discovering things that soon become commonplace.

Remember laser eye surgery?  Used to be tens of thousands of dollars to get your eyes corrected.  Now in the U.S. you can get it done for a few hundred bucks an eye...about the cost of a few pairs of good glasses.

The real desire is to have mediocre care for everyone AND still have the top notch technical healthcare that the private medical system provides.

And no one has figured out how to do that yet.  And yes, I've read all about the Swedish, norwegian, canadian and english systems.  Virtually everyone in those places travels somewhere else to have specialty/risky operations done.

In the U.S. the argument divides people:  if you say "Yea, I like that innovation stuff.  We have to keep doing that so the care will become more advanced" then people say "Oh, you think only rich people deserve health care"  If you say you want universal health care, people who have read/done some research know that that does solve one problem while creating rampant quality issues.
