Hey guys, hoping someone could shed some light on this problem.
This isn't a "i can't alt+tab to desktop while playing bf2/bf2142/etc" issue.
This is also not a CTD issue.
While playing bf series games (and only these) my computer will randomly task switch back to my desktop for no apparent reason, as if i had pressed alt-tab, excepting that I haven't. (note that i can easily alt-tab back in, but the first time this happens during a gaming session it takes some 75 seconds before I can actually task switch back to bf2, and then another 90 seconds or so for bf2 to come back up. i'm only running 1gb of ram on my desktop)
At first I thought my firewall/AV was to blame, but on double checking settings there i see that all updates are set to manual as I had believed, and also, all alerts are set to off.
Another small issue I'm having is that when I try using "Game Mode" in zonealarm security suite (definitely not really my choice in firewall, I prefer sygate personal, but zonealarm is easier for my 'rents, who own half of this particular machine) to prevent any type of alerts at all, bf2 refuses to connect to the login server and CTD's. Before you recommend adding bf(s) to the exclusion lists, know that I've already done so and all are properly set. Bf2/2142 are completely allowed/excluded from the firewalls checks.
For those who don't know, game mode can either allow or deny all new access attempts while enabled, supressing further any alerts that might interrupt your gameplay.
Is my firewall installation corrupt perhaps?
I'm running avast 4 Home, zonealarm security suite with AV off, any and all "auto-update" features for all of my applicatoins are set to manual. windows firewall is OFF, and stinger (now known as mccafee root kit), avast, spybot, adaware, windows malicious software removal etc etc etc all fail to return anything suspicious. (i'm fairly well versed in PC security, for instance I haven't had to format/reinstall OS for about 2 years on this particular machine, and it's performance level is as expected from a well-maintained PC)
any ideas that haven't crossed my mind would be greatly appreciated.
