I originally wanted to go AMD and go with the ASUS Crosshair, but lately I've been reading up and talking to folks, and I think I'm going to go Intel Core 2 Duo.

I want to go with the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz (good price and great OC'ing capabilities)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819115003

and am trying to choose between these mobos:

ASUS Striker Extreme - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813131074
eVGA 680i - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813188013
ASUS P5W DH - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813131025

And also, I want to be set up for DX10, so I would appreciate either a suggestion for 1 nice card or 2 candidates to SLI. (and I guess a suggestion for the proper power supply as well, 800+ w?)

As far as other components go, I want to raid 2 74gb raptors and toss in a large drive for files/music/video etc, use onboard sound as I don't give a shit about sound, and prob use onboard NIC as well.  I will also be installing Vista on this system.

Anyways, thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.

Striker is teh shizzle there m8, go for it

as for gfx cards ... one of these : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814143080 will own of you could SLI them if you've got the dough

PSU - enermax are always a reliable brand http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6817194019

i know the PSU is expensive - but enermax are one of (if not THE) best manufacturers of PSU's, and if you want to run 2 8800 GTX's that kilowatt won't let you down

for the price i'd be tempted to get this too : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6829102007 - DX10 will look great on that rig but sound rubbish :p

Mitch, What about the memory issues with teh Striker?  Seems that you have to really be careful w/ brand choices.

You need to tell us your budget before any serious reccommendations can be made.

If you've got 7.1 or 5.1 speaker set-up, then the soundcard is good, if you dont its just wasted money.

I have a $4k limit before shipping/taxes....

and I don't have any speakers worth buying a sound card for, yet.  When that day comes, I know where to start looking.

Well then get one 8800GTX and a Striker Extreme mobo, and then when games start to get a bit more challenging for the graphics card just add another one to the setup.

go with the eVGA one. Its a terrific overclocker and pretty much has everything the striker has (buts its cheaper and not so terribly picky)

use thepsu calculator then go with one that has a bit more power from a respectable brand (like enermax)

Unless you are bound and determined to go SLI, I wouldn't touch an NV chipset board with a 10 foot pole.

why is that? I've only had  positive experiences with them, although the new P35 chipset does look very nice

on topic: I forgot gfx: a single 8800GTX should be ideal

Same here. Every Nvidia chipset I've had has been superb - I know they've released a few lemons, but people generally steer clear of them.

$4K limit? Wahey! You can get a NICE system for way less than that.

Here's one such system:

dunno whether you needed a monitor or not, but a nice 24", 6ms, PVA screen @ 1920x1200 is always nice when running powerful GPUs in SLI.

Why don't you get a 24" Dell instead of Samsung though? I would prefer the Dell monitors actually.

Do not buy the striker, I repeat, do not! Save yourself $200, unless you really need e-Sata (which I doubt) that is pretty much all you are going to get for an extra 200 bucks. The heat pipes suck on that mobo by the way.

Search Anandtech, tomshardware, overclockers.uk anything, they will all tell you the price tag is ridiculous for what you get.

Buy the evga or the p5d wh is rock solid. If you want the SLI of the striker extreme buy the Asus P5n32-e sli plus, it is the stripped down striker for half the price, with no disadvantages.

I have ordered the following system almost identical to this OP, + all the aftermarket coolers:

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2007/0 … sli_plus/1

http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.h … VzaWFzdA==

I'm buying:

https://img185.imageshack.us/img185/4165/aaronscompcy2.jpg
https://img115.imageshack.us/img115/6376/coolersge7.jpg

My parts come in tomorrow, and it took me 5 solid days of research to find the best price/parts/availability in Canada. I have literally read hundreds of reviews, and the above system was the best I could come up with. I'd suggest buying the tuniq tower or the better thermaltake extreme 120 or whatever it is, but they are both huge and far exceed the recommended weight for the default HSF mount that the motherboard uses. I move my computer every two weeks up and down Vancouver Island, so I have to be careful with a heavy cooler in my case. If your comp stays stationary, get a better HSF and you can get 200mhz more overclock on air.

I wouldn't, that's better than any Dell monitor I've ever seen. Think he's got a monitor anyway.
