Birmingham:

Lozells Road. It's a predominantly black community, there's nothing wrong with that at all, but lately the younger generation are copying American "ghetto" ideals and are now turning themselves into a ghetto with shootings and crime rates spiralling out of control.

What pisses me off is that before hand it wasn't a ghetto! All of a sudden as it's cool to be in a ghetto tey are turning the areas they live in into ghettos.

Dublin, Ireland has the north inner city, the Liberties, Ballymun, Kilbarrack, Darndale, Clondalkin, Tallaght....

As regards other places I've been: Palestine IS a slum, London has Brixton and many other less than salubrious areas, most of Belfast IS a slum, Paris has slums, I checked out Harlem and various areas like that when I was in NYC, Cabrini Green in Chicago is notorious.... the list is endless.

Portland oregon has no ghetto, the closest tehy come is an african american suburb where the houses are, for the most part, under 2k sq ft. Outside of portland, there are trailer trash sort of places, but nothing inside portland.

I disagree with this because of my view of a slum.

What you guys seem to be referring to more is that of a ghetto rather than a slum.

These areas you are talking about might be where the poor live, but they have facilities which separate them from slums, i.e. the availability of council services, garbage collection, ambulance services, police service, etc...
Also, they generally have permanent housing in those areas where as in a slum, homes will come and go.

i would have to say there is. every city i have visited (49 of the 50 states and a couple times out of the country) has had a bad area. hell even on maui there were some pretty sketchy places.

Relatively poor workers are employed in every wealthy area, and they have to live somewhere. It is a common pattern for poor areas--maybe slums, maybe not--to spring up near wealthy areas so the maids, cleaning people, nannies, etc. don't have to travel too far to work.

Been there. Better than any other city I've been too but somehow was still plagued by prostitutes from eastern Europe, Russia and Africa. Didn't actually notice any slums per se though. Gotta love socialism: the way forward - everyone marches forward towards prosperity together.

wow, never looked at it that way, I thought around the world there would be lots of Neat clean cities with people defiantly boasting about them with pride. Maybe not the Norm but achievable however. I am very suprised be the results so far. Perhaps most of the young adults ( the clear majority here ) have left school for vacation already? leaving just some demented old guys and a few shut in who can't score women or look cool at a beach.
