I'm a United States citizen.  Have you noticed that more and more Americans are vilifying their own country?  Its probabaly the war, but I'm not sure.  In Oregon a couple of months back you saw what looked like American citizens buring an effigy of a United State soldier - something like this we usually see in a 3rd world nation or France.

We complain that our privacy is being abated.

We complain that our freedoms are being overridden.

We complain that hate speech is allowed to be heard.

We complain that our governement isn't doing enough for them.

We complain ALOT.

Basically, if its so bad here, why no move to another country?

Can I complain that "a lot" is two words?

But seriously, you can support the best football team in the World but you still moan when they give the ball away and you wouldn't switch teams just because of it either.

What a truly ridiculous OP. When are people in this world going to realise that your Government is supposed to work for the people not the other way around? If you don't like what's happening to your country, what do you do? ...complain to the people you elected to run it, that's what. It's there bloody job to run the country properly. Many people are now opposed to the prolonging of the occupation of Iraq but the incumbent administration is too pig headed to listen to the turning tide of the people. American civil liberties have been encroached upon in recent years also and people have a right to complain, the US is still a democratic nation (just about!) is it not. The suggestion that anyone who doesn't like it should leave is complete nonsense.

Your comment is fair enough only in terms of non Americans living in America who are complaining about the US.

Because they see that the country is going backwards or something? I'm not so sure about American history but from what I've heard from some people is that the country is ignoring all the rights that were made when the country was made or something.

And another thing, they have nowhere else to go. They probably like the country so much that they want it to be better, so they criticize it. Because they want the place to be better.

Thirdly, what you're implying is that you should shut up or leave? I mean, doesn't that go against everything your country stands for. This is unbelievable. Why don't you go live in China or Russia or in the ME if you want to live somewhere where people aren't allowed to criticize shit.

---

You know how the old saying goes

"I don't agree with what you say, but i'll defend your freedom to say with with my life"

or something along those lines.

And let me just say something, because i know you guys do this to loads of people, just because i disagree with what he said, doesn't mean i condone the activities of burning effigies of soldiers and stuff. For fucks sake.

US citizens complain, but so does everyone else, people always complain because it makes people feel better to know that whilst they arn't worst off in the world they are close, and well it also gives people something to hope for.
However the whole burning effigies thing seems a little extreme i would put it down to a side effect of propaganda but the US doesn't seem to get much of that apart from the governments (Bush using the word terrorist whenever he can) and films (right at your door, sum of all fears...) but they arn't very heavy and not enough i wouldn't think...

i love this country. people bitch all over the world, its just how it goes. be happy you live in a country where you can bitch about anything all day long. over here, you can shout "Fuck GW!" all day long and nobody can stop you, now if you go try that over in north korea what would happen? right, none of us know because they dont even allow the fucking press in that shithole.

its all about gratuity......if you want something different, talk to your local elected official and see what the deal is. ive talked to my representative before about laws in missouri, there is no reason why you cant write a letter, or an email or even make a phone call.

i am not so delusional to think that our system is perfect, but sometimes it does work the way its intended.
and as far as people bitching goes.....get over it, its one of our rights, just like owning firearms.

I'll just address the "Why do US citizens complain so much?"

To be honest, how many people go around 24/7 telling everyone how wonderful everything is.  Note, I'm not saying there is nothing good happening here - its just not as memorable.  Plus you choose what you remember Mr. Negativity.

People everywhere, in every corner of every street, of every village, of every town, of every city in the entire world complain about countless things. This isn't some American preserve or something. It's every persons right to lash out at the slings and arrows we must bear as we trudge through our shitty existence.

Should the colonist have just submitted to the will of the King?
Should Martin Luther King have just moved?
We told the American Indians to move and look what happened there.

It is the duty of every American to stand up for what they believe in. Having a grievance with your government does not mean you hate your country.

First off it did make me laugh seeing a thread entitled "Why do U.S. citizens complain so much?", then seeing the first line of the OP read:

Harmour wrote:

I'm a United States citizen.
It then proceeded to complain about Americans complaining.

Surely I'm not the only one who finds this amusing.

Parker wrote:

Exactly. Just as those who complain love the country. They are complaining to try and make it a better place.

Or stage some sort of organised demonstration. All of these methods are perfectly legitimate ways of getting things you have grievances about changed.

Properly managed complaints are a good thing. They lead to progress. Poorly managed complaints lead to a discontent population, which leads to having an ineffective country.

@OP
If you don't like people complaining, why don't you move to a country where complaining isn't allowed? That'd make far more sense than complaining about people exercising their rights.

Wah I'm complaining about my civil liberties guaranteed in the Constitution eroding at the hands of politicians!

Wah I'm complaining about the use of signing statements!

Wah I'm complaining about the Government's inability to handle domestic issues while fighting wars in two different countries!

It is called discourse.  It is healthy.  I like how you morphed your statement from complaining to vilifying.  As if asking questions and thinking critically equates to vilifying the country.

Bottom line - I love it here.  I do not agree with a lot of action taken in society, economy, and politics, but it is not to the point where I feel the need to move.

Like someone above stated, move to a country where people aren't allowed to complain.  You are vilifying our country

The problem with American citizens is that we complain too much, and don't take enough action anymore. It's so much easier to live our cushy lives and raise our voice at something we don't agree with, but never expend the energy needed to actually attempt making a change. The way our country is going, the government could systematically rob us of all our freedoms over the next 20 years (That actually might be a pretty accurate statement already) and nobody would do a god damn thing. We would bitch and complain, but ultimately deal with it because we're lazy. If 1/3 of our country cared about some of the policies and out right lies that our government has been guilty of, then our country would be a bit of a different place at the moment.

How does that one saying go... "People should not fear their government, the government should fear its people."

You're quoting V for Vendetta.

As a resident of Canuckistan (Canada) I can tell you that America is still the freest country in the world, bar none.  Don't see lineups to live in ANY country in Africa, South America, Asia or Eastern Europe do you?

As for Western Europe, they are the pinnacle of multi-generational welfare socialism.  Their central government spends time regulating the shape of bananas for God's sake!

A better saying that we have up here:  In Canada, the government hates the people.  In America, the people hate the government.

(a little off topic) I've been looking at the Nine Inch Nails concept project/album/alternate reality game online a lot lately. It paints a scary picture of what could happen to a complacent American nation in just 15 years if it continues down the political road its on at the moment, many aspects of this vision of the future aren't that far fetched.
