I think the easiest way to answer this is that beliefs exist.

Time exists because we perceive it as such.  It isn't tangible, but it is something that at least exists in our minds.

By the same token, that which we cannot perceive still exists as well, but the trick is that, unless we can perceive it or logically infer that it exists, for all practical purposes, it doesn't exist.  This is what makes religion tricky....

Someone can believe something very strongly, but if no one else believes in it, then it really is of little consequence.  On the flip side, if a lot of people believe in something, then it can be very influential even if it doesn't exist outside of their minds.
