After many years 4-5 of my internet disconnecting i took my pc downstairs and plugged it directly into the main line for my house. I left my computer on and while connected the the internet without it loosing connection. This got me thinking and i know know that it was my phone line extension cable that was the problem(i have had 2-3 of these but it must not be able to handle the speeds).

I'm looking at some wireless modems and i haven't got a clue about them and i don't feel like be ripped off by some tech guy at my local pc shop.

So do you guys have wireless and what is it like?. I don't even know what i need for a wireless modem or how to set it up, I'm not even so sure i have the correct slot as my current modem is usb.

Any help is appreciated.

TBH if you can live with a wire stick with it, I don't know anyone who has been happy with a wireless connection other than people who like to browse the internet on there laptops around the house or in the garden.
You could try the network over mains adapters (this uses the existing house mains wireing loop to create a network).
You would need a router (should be able to blag a free one from your ISP) and two mains network adapters (approx £65 for two netgear ones + one for every other you want to attach to the network.
Simply plug the adpater into a mains socket, plug your router into it, then plug another adapter into a mains socket near your pc and connect it to the pc.

worth a look

Get a decent Netgear one, very easy to setup and pretty good for wireless imo.

A router is what you need, not a modem i think.

Netgear FTW.

I have had.... 3(ish) Netgear routers, and whilst the gaming performance hasn't been as good wireless as it has been wired, it is still playable.

I currently have a DG834PN Wireless router, before that i had a DG834G. Before that i can't remember

However, all 3 have provided a very solid service, and would recommend them to anyone.

DONT GET A NETGEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have one and it is a POS it loses connection every 2 or so days and I have to reboot it to get back on the Internet.  I suggest Lynksys Routers as they are a division of Cisco and they are the leaders in Network technology.

This is the one I bought. My PC is a fair distance from my phone line (6 walls between them) and it's high power for such problems. Very easy to configure and no problems since I got it. The http://broadbandbuyer.co.uk site also gives some good advice on what to buy depending on your broadband type.

I got a 3com one, and a netgear one that sky MADE me use when I switched to them. (it's totally shit, my 3com one was much better and they won't give me the information to use my 3com)

Anyway, since I have been using this router wirelessly, it's been disconnecting every few hours and I get huge packet loss from time to time too, very annoying in bf2.

Yesterday I decided to plug my router into the PC, and have an extension cable going to the phone. So far it's been working out much better that before and bf2 is more playable again.

I don't really know what I'm trying to say here, because my old wireless router worked fine: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/112927

You will also need a wireless PCI card or USB stick (But I would go with PCI)

I have BT wirless, i bought a Belkin G+ Wireless desktop card for my desktop. Setup was a bit awkward, but BT tech support always answered the phone (unlike telewest, 3hrs on hold just to cancel) So yeah, id recomend BT but my speeds could be better.
