The Bush administration has placed China, Russia, Argentina, Chile, Egypt, India, Israel, Lebanon, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine and Venezuela on a "priority watch list" for failing to sufficiently protect American producers of music, movies and other copyrighted material from widespread piracy. The 12 will be under extra scrutiny and could eventually lead to economic sanctions if the administration decides to bring trade cases before the World Trade Organization. Another 31 countries were placed on lower level monitoring lists, indicating the concerns about copyright violations in those nations did not warrant the highest level of scrutiny. The designations occurred in a report, known as a "Special 301 Report," that the administration is required to provide Congress each year highlighting problems American companies are facing around the world with copyright piracy, which they contend is costing them billions of dollars in lost sales annually. "We must defend ideas, inventions and creativity from rip-off artists and thieves," U.S. Trade Representative Susan C. Schwab said in a statement accompanying this year's report.

Representatives of U.S. companies applauded the new administration report but Oxfam America denounced the administration: "The report ignores important international agreements signed by the U.S. government ... which clearly state that developing countries have the right to place public health and the public interest over intellectual property rules," said Rohit Malpani, a policy adviser with Oxfam.

Neil Turkewitz, an official with the Recording Industry Association of America, said the administration was right to single out China and Russia for special criticism in the report. Dan Glickman, head of the Motion Picture Association of America, said the new report indicated "the scope of global piracy and serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges ahead."

Yeah, when I get my torrent for Heroes every week, I'm pretty sure it comes up an hour earlier than it's shown in the US because they show it in Canada first. And those Canadian uploaders are very quick off the bat.

I can't believe Israel is in the list.  The US will place sanctions on it, but will use its veto.

What's funny is that there's only one country on the list (so far as I know, what's Turkey like?) that doesn't have widespread poverty.

It's also the only one recieve big US military backing.

The countries placed on a lower-level watch list were Belarus, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Jamaica, South Korea, Kuwait, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
Bush forgot Sweden.

But Borat would be pleased about the status of Israel and Uzbekistan.

Oh cmon now, the whole world is in with this. This is stupid. Who gives a shit about artists anyway, it's already known they make most of their money from sponsors and other shit and not from the actual selling of records and whatnot.

Pop artists, yes, but not real artists.

Well, the USA is going all world police again, but I agree that measures have to be taken against piracy - in countries that aren't that poor! The USA should try cleaning up its own act before criticizing these countries.

Exactly. Why isn't the US on this "priority watch list?" In fact, they should make another one for failing to protect consumers from malignant and predatory business and law practices, and put the US on or near the top.

Doesn't a lot of it depend of which international copyright treaties the countries have signed. Not all coutries are signed up to all copyright treaties.

And the 12 countries, and countless others, have the right to take something produced from a mind other than their own & something made with a body that wasn't their own. Capitalism the only thing that has raised the standard of living for the whole world, & you would destroy it and the very concept with which you wouldn't have a product to begin with.

I'm suprised about that to. The fact that a lot of people between 15-35 have connection from 1mb to 24mb. Hell its cheap and no limit of how much we can download. I'm currently sitting on a connection with 1mb per second if faster its up to 1.4mb per second.

There where some numbers that said about 75% of the swedish people could get broadband and its those 1mb connections and up. heck 30% of our people download just TV series that's still not out here yet. Who knows how many more download games and so.

But then again how the hell are US gonna stop it? destroy every computer? bust in to every house that download something ilegal?
