Brass and plastic shells litter the ground so thick you can't see the ground just beyond where I stand.
Cars, refrigerators, computers. The whole world is your target gallery. Everywhere there is wilderness adjacent to humanity this is what you have.
What, do you think somebody comes out here to clean up your target range?

lol, there's a place like that by my house. Dirt trail leads up to a dirt clearing and its got a couple of wrecked cars with trash everywhere. Shotgun shells are very a common sight as well.

Saying "American target shooters" is quite a blanket statement... The same day my dad taught me to shoot a rifle, he taught me how to clean up my brass, even though we were just shooting a .22. But, I understand your gripe. There's a gravel pit behind my farm that gets junked up like that really bad, too. It's a real eyesore when I go 4 wheeler riding out there.

Whoever did that is an ass. When ever I target shoot I always make sure to pick up all my spent casings, ammo boxes and targets. I would never leave a place looking like that.

Maybe it's just your f*cking state. None of the target ranges in my area look like that; not even the outdoor ones. I don't know about the people over there, but I collect all my brass.

Yeah - we get that a lot when tourists visit, even though we have a trash can practically every 15m. (in Switzerland)
Here in the UK it's really hard to find a trash can, but I still don't litter. Ever.
People should really clean up after themselves >.<

I put a washing machine and some planks in my backpack, balanced some cinderblocks on the handlebars and rode away.
I also found four full cartons of shooting clays.

That's a shitty deal for sure. The shooting range that I frequent has a semi-annual cleanup, and is farily good at keeping the area in good standing. I always make it a point to pick up my brass, as well as a few shells that aren't mine. There are just too many careless folks out there who believe that the range is their right, and not a privilage to use.

I guess everything is bigger in the US if you can fit a washing machine in your backpack. Good job on cleaning up though. Perhaps you should report it to your local governmental official, to get them to clean the rest up properly. And to shoot the guys that keep littering in the ass.

The indoor pistol range I was a member of for awhile had a periodic cleanup for sweeping up brass, hauling out the lead from the backstops etc. Even though that cleanup system was in place I still cleaned up my brass after going through a couple boxes. Felt wrong to just leave it there. Outside I always pick up my brass or shells.

Littering in any form makes me angry when I see it. Especially people who toss trash out of their cars. How hard is it to throw it on the floor and then find a trash can when you park? It think the fines for littering should be increased.
