I'm always on the lookout for good movies that may have passed under the mainstream radar, I'd love to hear any suggestions from anyone. Here's a few that I thought were truly great and didn't get nearly enough attention or praise...

1. L.I.E. by Michael Cuesta (US 2002)
2. Dead Man's Shoes by Shane Meadows (UK 2005)
3. Right At Your Door by Chris Gorak (UK 2006)
4. I Went Down by Paddy Breathnach (Ireland 1998)
5. Roger Dodger by Dylan Kidd (US 2002)

Here's more (although they aren't that unheard of)

1. The Station Agent (2003)
2. Falling Down (1993)
3. 25th Hour (2002)

Actually you may have heard of the last 2.
+1 for the idea though.

ive seen Right At Your Door...

it was wierd because i thought that the concept and the idea was good...but the way it abruptly came to an end was odd, but i liked the twist at the end.

it wasnt as such an eventful film...but interesting non the less

Fair point, I think I probably liked it because I originally thought it was a Hollywood studio film and would be a formulaic piece of nonsense. It reminds me of a cross between Dawn of the Dead (remake), 28 Days Later and United 93.

Irreversible (Twisted Movie)

Festin (Twisted Movie)

Shallow Grave (Twisted Movie)

Some Like It Hot (Classic)

The Seventh Seal (One of the all time greats)

The Third Man(Awesome film)

Princess Mononoke (Japanamation at it's best)

Memento (Twisted Movie)

Lucky Number Sleven (Twisted Movie)

Lord Of War (Well known but it's one of my favorites)

The Man With Two Brains (Classic)

Hustle and Flow (Great Story)

Oldboy (Twisted Movie)

Hero (I love kung fu's)

Yeah I think that one knocked me for six for like a year.  I didn't wanna see any other movies cause it messed me up so hard, but like I said it's gotta be seen either way, it's like sushi you might not like raw fish but you should try it right?

The Legend of 1900 is one of my all time favorites but sadly it didn't get the publicity, notoriety or credit that it deserved.

Every film I saw after Irreversible seemed insignificant and weak for a long time. It took me a while to recover from that film too. I read a review once from an actor who seen it at Sundance, he said it was like someone 'had opened a little box of hell in the cinema'!

What did like about roger dodger braddock?
By the end i felt dirty. The man was so compromised in his morals and i just couldn't seem to take anything constructive away from the movie. It was moderately entertaining but generally i thought it just felt awkward.

I don't feel a movie needs to take moral stance, I admire films that are content to just study a certain type of character without passing judgment on them (like I Stand Alone By Gaspar Noe). Horrible shits like Roger Dodger exist and it's often entertaining to observe how they operate in social circles (in real life too, not just watching them in film) but at the end of the day their existence is probably quite lonely and I think the film captured that.

A lot of people haven't seen Cinderella man, probably heard of it though. I was sort of forced to watch it, but it really is a great film.

Very twisted but excellent movie like a lot of the recent dark Korean crime films.

2 other great films by the same director are:
Sympathy for Mr Vengeance
Lady Vengeance

The Hong Kong films which spawned the Hollywood film The departed:
Infernal Affairs 1,2,3.

"Out of the Blue" (NZ 2006)

Incredibly heavy, powerful and believable film about the 1990 Aramoana massacre. Most realistic film I have ever seen.

Memento (Twisted Movie)
These are two of my favorites.  I tried to get the wife to watch them both.  She loved Memento.  But I couldn't get her to watch Monoonoke, because I like getting laid.

But, with that being said....it's as good as any Disney or Pixar movie made, actually has a great "non-cartoon" plot, and it's really cool.  Truly unique...

As far as japanimation, my fave is still Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - "Kaze no tani no Naushika".  Movie butchered the original manga, but the non-dubbed one is still fairly good.  As for the wife, show her Kiki's Delivery Service - Majo no Takkyubin.  My wife loved it.
