I think my sound quality sux on my comp. I'm using a built in sound card on my mobo, but I want to buy one so I can get really good game sound.

Anybody have good recommendations that are under $140 or so? How good is your sound and what card do you have?

of course if your posh like me you could get a Razer Barracuda but its not really worth it

i only have one just for the novetly of it

edit: that soundcard is $130, razer barracuda is $350

razer performance is slightly better but its not worth it unless you are a sound whore.

I have a sound blaster x-fi XtremeMusic. Its pretty neat and has a better sound quality than the on board. Not the best out there (but performs pretty close to the best) but at least its cheap

Creative X-fi cards are within your budget, and they are awesome. I have the cheaper X-treme music one, and let me say, it was worth every penny. When I went from my onboard sound to one of these puppies, it was like night and day. The sounds in battlefield where much punchier and clearer sounding and my music never sounded better.

Same here, an X-Fi Fatal1ty will do you proud, failing that go for the slightly older and cheaper Audigy 2

XtremeMusic or XtremeGamer, both will rock the casbah.

How many speakers do you have hooked up?

I even have an Audigy 2ZS, a cheaper alternative, and I love it. It's capable of 5.1 surround, but I only have a 2.1 connected to it.

More than likely your motherboards sound chipset doesn't suck, soundcards long ago reached their max capabilities for human hearing. What you actually need looking at is getting a decent speaker setup. Chances are the sound quality problems you've been having are more than likely down to your speakers.

I personally highly recommend the Logitech Z-2300, it has outstanding speakers.

All the current creative cards etc offer is fancier bells and whistles.

Wow, I have those speakers(Z-2300).  I have an on-board sound card.  Would a sound card actually help???

Keep an eye open for Auzentech. Their next card will be based on the Creative X-Fi chipset. Their current Cmedia based ones are not bad at all either...
