4-16-07: A chronological story.
2 Weeks Ago: The First Bomb Threat
Ryan Gaylo, a friend of mine who lived down the hall from me last year was working in the ECE department in Whittemore Hall. While double checking a mail box for documents, he found a piece of green engineering paper. On this paper was the word “NOTICE” in the name section, and a statement that a bomb was placed in Torgersen Hall and would be detonated later that night. This caused the evacuation of Torgersen Hall until later in the evening.
Last Friday: The Second Bomb Threat
As I was attending an awards ceremony, a bomb threat was discovered warning of attacks on Durham, Whittemore and Torgersen Halls. I spent the weekend at home, so I do not have any real specifics, however it is assumed by the fact that the buildings are still standing that there were indeed no bombs.
Today:
I checked my email at about 8:55 before heading out to breakfast at D2 (The local dining hall, its really nice, and has a view of Ambler Johnston). There were no new emails from the university or anyone else for that matter. I ate breakfast from 9:10 to 9:40 (my usual times). I did not realize it then, but I was eating just a few meters away from a murder scene. Only one side of the building had ambulances and police… this was not my side. I proceeded down towards Derring Hall by going across the drill field and through Williams Hall. As I got onto the drill field from the residential side of campus (about 9:45 or so) I heard the first sirens. At first I assumed it was another bomb threat. Several more cop cars from VT PD, Blacksburg PD, Christiansburg PD, and state troopers converged in front of Burruss Hall. By the time I got to the steps of Williams Hall, people with M-16’s had exited the vehicle and started running up the main staircase of Buruss and surrounding Norris Hall. I proceeded to Derring where I learned that the school was on lock down, because there was shooting going on in Norris.
I sat there in my engineering class until about 10:15, at which point I broke the lockdown and proceeded to Robeson Hall ( the main physics building… my second major). I hanged out with the physics professors and some hot business majors while all the commotion was going on outside. Now something of interest… Buruss connects to GBJ connects to Pamplin connects to Robeson connects to Hahn connects to Davidson and Chem/Physics. So if the killer had escaped Norris and entered Buruss ( literally 20 feet away) he could have theoretically killed people across half of the academic side of campus. The business majors were all scared, so they demanded to be let into our department lounge, which has a lock. This was possibly the first time any more than one business major had been in this room at a time (a sign of how upheaving this day was to routine). It was not until 12:05 or so until we were permitted to evacuate from the building to cars and for those of us in the dorms… back across campus. I kept my head on a swivel the entire way back. Another point of interest; the weather. It was snowing this morning, about 40 degrees with high wind. After we were allowed to leave there was hardly a cloud in the sky. However, the pressure gradient in the wind tunnel ( the underpass of the connecting floor between Pamplin and Robeson) was as high as its been since I’ve been here. I nearly lost a beanie, and was nearly lifted off the ground. I guess even mother nature was pissed about what happened today.
At this point the estimates were still 1 dead, 17 wounded. By the time I got back to my dorm (Lee Hall), the total had jumped to 20 dead, 20 wounded. I was shocked. It was completely unbelievable. I checked the vt website, and sure enough it was true. People on the hall were worried about me because they hadn’t heard from me. I mean, they all know I’m Aerospace Engineering/Physics double major, and that I’ve had a class in Norris before; so I understood their concern. From my window I can see the front of Norris Hall. I got my binoculars out and zeroed in on the lawn in front of the building. To my horror, there was a body bag. At about 12:45 a state trooper in full body armor with a 12 guage went walking down my hall. We asked the RA why a terminator just strolled through our hall and he said that there have been reports of a man in a white sweat shirt wearing a Kevlar vest saying he’s with the fire dept. going around. I have not heard more on this story since, so I assume it was extraneous information not dissimilar to the false reports of the State Department being bombed on 9/11. I watched outside my window for two hours as body bags were carried out. It was about this time when the full scope of things started to sink in.
I decided to check bf2s to see if anyone had started a thread about the massacre yet. Sure enough someone had with good enough intentions and a bunch of people had already started spouting their horse shit about guns. Seeing most of you not take this seriously or trying to turn it into a numbers game pissed me off that I decided to return to D2 for lunch. I remained there until 16:30. Another point of interest: there were state troopers ALL OVER THE PLACE. Inside the dining hall alone there was at least 20 troopers with automatic weapons. I felt safe, but it was a reminder I didn’t need. At this point, I realized something else. My professor’s office is in Norris, and he is always there before class (the class I had been heading to after breakfast). I realized that there was the very real possibility that my professor had been killed. This made me even more sad. When I returned to the dorm the numbers had jumped to 32 dead. That’s an entire class in that building. I could not seem to get my mind off of what it must have looked like in there, who was in there, how they died. I couldn’t even think of starting Battlefield and playing.
Around 1930 I was reminded of a project I have due this week for Electrodynamics involving devices that transmit or receive EM waves. Considering the MASSIVE amounts of coverage the event was getting, I felt it necessary to go down to the Inn and take some pictures of the satellite equipment. I found it was a good way to get my mind off of what had gone on. My friend and I were interviewed by a host from the today show, and from the foxnews.com website. We were also able to see the press conference room and a number of impressive personalities. I suppose that while it may not be kosher to do so I should inform you all that the article with the link “I Just Hope Nobody I Know Died” on the fox news website is titled with my quote. My friend got hired by nightline to drive the reporter around Blacksburg… he got a free tank of gas for his Dodge Ram, and a considerable sum of money. While he was occupied, another friend and I returned to the Inn and met Geraldo Rivera and Brian Williams. Let me say, Geraldo Rivera is a douche! He talks to us for 5 seconds and then just walks away without saying goodbye or anything! Brian Williams is a classy man, he managed to blow us off and keep us from realizing it for almost a minute! That’s skill, and how you can tell a good journalist from a bad journalist.
Names have started coming out for some of the people killed. The RA who was killed in AJ is an acquaintance of mine through a high school friend who sits next to him in the band. His name is Ryan Clark… aka Stack. And before any of you say some bullshit about how he might have been involved with this girl, allow me to tell you that he was a homosexual. He was a good guy, always had a huge smile on his face. RIP. Thankfully, my professor is OK. As more names come out I’ll let people know about the ones I knew, but hopefully that list is small. It’s been a long day, its been a hard day, so I’m going to get some rest. But let me say one thing. PLEASE leave this shit about guns and crap for another day, another thread. Its completely offensive to me and to everyone else who’s been here through this to see you people use it as a support for your talking points. This event is not a talking point, it’s a tragedy.
