Despite how cool people think it is it's still wrong. A teacher having sex with their student is abusing their power and taking advantage of someone who isn't mature enough to make adult sexual decisions. It may be thrilling for the student at first but later in life it could adversely affect any chance for a normal relationship.

As for the original question, I would love to say that this is only a recent occurance, but I'd be willing to bet that there were many of these occurances even before the media began to report them. I think that only after that first huge scandal (forgot the names), the media began digging for more of these "juicy" stories, thus leading to an increase in these sort of things.
Of course, it could also be that after this first story, teachers all across the nation began to copy the incident. Copy-cat Sex Offenders.

I am leaning towards predator since they are often pretty enough to find dick. Dick might as well grow on trees so many guys willing to give it away.
I will never be one of these teachers by the way. Aside from it being gross and illegal, there are plenty of lady teachers to come onto. It is good fun having an ex have to sit and watch you give a speech to a crowd.

Thinking it over a bit more...definitely predator. Someone not familiar with relationships and dating definitely can be manipulated easily. These lady predators probably get off on the idea of wrapping their victims around their finger.
it seems to be a psychological type, you see a lot of middle-aged women teachers who fall in love or have emotional clinginess with their students.

The 26 year old teacher I knew seems like the type to get herself into that. She had a weird giggly thing with one student and talking to him and about him. I can imagine that unstable woman on the news. I would be unsurprised if the people who know the teacher above are also unsurprised.
Honestly it seems weird even if they spontaneously hook up after the kid's grown. Robbing the cradle much.

There is a high admin who has a wife who is a high admin. Rumor is she was his student.
I do definitely think some of the guy teachers treat the girl students with the expectation that they might be able to get something from them when they graduate. Groomers isn't too far off though it isn't the LGBT doing it. It is the straight males.

it’s very common and super ethically muddy even when it happens between university academics and their students, who are adults at least. huge power imbalance, weird dynamics.
