I don't have time to read it all, but I must disagree on this and offer up a counter-saying: 'without those who teach, those who do...do less.' Teaching is a respectable position and, especially in college situations, those who become professors often turn down or leave higher-paying jobs to do so. But there is sometimes truth to what he said. Some people do settle back into that cozy notion of a job and do the bare minimum required to be paid.

It's all about balance. The 'liberal' mindset is too far to the left and the 'conservative' mindset is too far to the right. Neither works. Somewhere in between lies the best course of action, the difficulty is in finding the right balance. Too many benefits supported by high taxation leads to less economic growth and too few benefits with less taxation also leads to less economic growth (in the long term) and social unrest.
The lack of individualisation that sums up the liberal mindset to many people is a bad thing, as is the whole concept of equal ability - some people are better at stuff than others. An example of this in action is the target of the Labour government in the UK to get 50% of students into university level education, which I think is an awful idea, because 50% of the population are not capable of getting a degree - to meet that target standards will have to fall and why should other peoples qualifications be devalued just to include the less talented. On the other hand programmes that make access to higher education easier for poorer students are clearly a good thing, because they give poorer students opportunities - if they are capable then good luck to them, if not, sorry you'd better find another way to drag yourself up above the poverty line.

An easy 5-step program to being an idiot.

1. Get an opinion on something. Reinforce it with strong emotions and stubbornness.
2. Find those who oppose.
3. Group them into an extremely broad, vague category with differing worldwide meanings.
4. Write "authoritative" papers declaring them to be the scum of the earth.
5. Anyone who still opposes is a conspiracy theorist who has been brainwashed by unfortunate nonexistent organizations.

I don't like getting fucked six ways to Sunday by some higher-ups who've decided they can make things more "efficient" by cutting my hours or my benefits while they vote themselves another salary raise. That's why I have to laugh about this whole "Winners drive home in the dark" bit. Once upon a time that might've been true. Nowadays, you might as well say "Lackeys drive home in the dark" or maybe "Suckers drive home in the dark". Rare is the corporation that actually values a work ethic like that; more often than not they'll take your extra labor while trying to figure out how to screw you out of your overtime pay. You're not a sucker for having a work ethic. You're a sucker if you think the people above you actually give a damn. You'd be better off spending that time with your family, or working on your own business instead of grinding yourself away for some suit who can't even get your name right and would probably cut your throat in front of your family if he thought it would get him moved up another rung on the ladder. But we all make our own decisions in the end. Myself, I just try to remember where I came from, what I went through to get here and the people that helped me along the way even if they barely had anything to give. I can live with that. Hope y'all can do the same.

I am wondering how the solutions that worked for me will not work for everyone.hmmmmmm So, poverty for me was cured by getting an education, learning a trade, making myself marketable, having motivation determination, drive, pride. etc.....Explain to me how these attributes will not cure ANYONES' poverty, cuz I just don't get it.

your very words about how you changed your life and took control of it does nothing but prove me and everyone else right on this issue. Maybe that is why you left the thread.
