"Mexico City (Mexico) The new mayor of Mexico City is offering criminals a free Xbox 360 for every handgun, and a free PC for higher caliber firearms such as assault rifles, that are handed into police in an amnesty, according to Reuters.

The move is being trialled in one of the more dangerous neighborhoods in the city and will be extended elsewhere if it proves a success. Already 17 handguns have been handed in, with the ex-criminals walking away with an Xbox 360 with which to conduct crime and mayhem in a less destructive virtual environment."

who in their right mind thinks a guns for XBox program is going to solve crime?

Microsoft has got to be loving this. Lets sell more consols. Next time maybe they will include a new HDTV.

A commisioner in Cincinnati was crazy enough to try a similar program with amnesty, we have broken our own murder record 3 straight years.

So they'll hand in one of their weapons, say "hey thanks for the 360", go get in their car and grab the one hidden under the passenger seat to replace it.

Just about. I'm sure if the neighborhood is known for crime, the people who trade in a gun would be able to get another one cheaply on the black market. Price of Xbox 360 > handgun. It's a win win situation for the criminals.

I would love to be the microsoft reseller working with the mayor. He should see an nice kick back.

It I was a tax payer I would be demanding my state purchased 360. Why should criminals be the only ones to have any fun.

Criminals are criminals. None of them are going to say, wow, a free 360. I guess I'll just give up my life of crime, and sit around and play xbox all day. Of course, I'll have to get a job too, but that's ok, 'cause I can play my free xbox!

God I hate stupid shit like this. If the mexican government would take the money being spent here and spend it on their police force, maybe it would be less corrupt.
