That would definitely be a big step towards totalitarianism.
Defending Israel and oil interests in the Middle East: yes. Defending the US: no. Iraq were never a threat to the US.Bubbalo wrote:
Personally, I'd say that someone who honestly thinks the US army is actively defending the US is more foolish.

Potentiality is not actuality. If Australia were fighting a war to defend those who could not defend themselves, I'd be on the front lines if at all possible. The same could be true of those burning the effigy. Further, many soldiers may try to avoid harm as much as possible despite being in the army. One cannot assume those sorts of things.Parker wrote:
if you will read closer you will see that i said the people they are protesting are the people that *WOULD* (thats the key word buddy, in case you didnt catch it the first time) defend the freedoms they hold so dear.
good effort.
I've already stated that I disagree with the actions of these anarchists but I must argue with you on this point. The US soldiers are not 'saving' the lives of any Americans by fighting in Iraq. You could argue that they are fighting to liberate the Iraqi's (and I would argue that too) but Iraq was never a threat to America, they would never have logistically been able to mount any kind of credible attack on the United States and the argument of WMD's has been completely proven wrong.David.Podedworny wrote:

Honestly? No fucking idea. But it doesn't matter. They didn't assault or harm anyone and they didn't destroy anyone's property but their own. The constitution doesn't say it has to make sense ya know.ATG wrote:
So how is burning an effigy redressing the government?
I'd actually draw it way before that, around about someone getting into a troop's face and shouting abuse at him. But the idea that such could (or has) actually occurred without the perpetrator ending up in the emergency room is laughable.ATG wrote:

Then don't talk to me, it's pretty easy. But don't say you can't talk to me and then toss in "but I was in two wars so I know more than you" and expect me not to respond. You aren't in this war. I'm willing to bet your two wars didn't drag on this long or have your ass constantly getting shot at or nearly blown up by a few pounds of semtex and a cell phone for four years.usmarine2007 wrote:

And I have been in two wars, and a few other places before 9/11, so I know all about deployments.
Just can't get through this without a false premise I guess. Lemme spell it out for you chief: my life is not under fucking threat from a bunch of cave-dwelling religious fanatic retards who've only managed to pull off one serious act since they day they formed. Every other supposed "threat" since them has turned out to be some bunch of losers who either can't even afford shoes let alone explosives, have to be practically handheld through How to Blow Shit Up 101 by their FBI minders, or both. American soldiers haven't fought to protect me from squat since the 1940's; ever since then it's just been a big bullshit chess game with the Soviet Union using live people for pieces until the Soviets finally went broke trying to play. You know what would protect me from people wanting to kill me because I'm American? Not having the US government support walking talking shitbags like Saddam until they're no longer "convenient". Not having the US government send the military to tear-ass into another country without the slightest fucking clue of what they were going to do after they dismantled half of what held the country together. That's scratching the surface of what would keep me safe.David.Podedworny wrote:

As I mentioned, so that law enforcement can't easily single out just one of them for arrest. This way they all run the same risk as anyone else in the group. Also they can't be easily identified and then harassed or generally fucked with later on. If you see that as cowardice, fine, seems more like good tactical sense to me.deeznutz1245 wrote:
Still makes them cowards. What are the other reasons though?
Patriotism is for suckers. And like the man said, the last refuge of scoundrels. It's one step away from outright deranged nationalism. Maybe closer in the case of some of you here. I like this place. I like most of the people in it. There's a lot of great history and a lot of beautiful places. But when patriotism demands that I never question the good and that I completely ignore or whitewash the bad, patriotism can get fucked.deeznutz1245 wrote:
The same could be said about your patriotism.
No, no they fucking don't get thrown out the window just because they offend you. If you react, that's on you and not anybody else. You wanna talk cowardice? "He made me beat the shit out of him", that's fucking cowardice. And tell me, was it Cindy Sheehan who drove a pickup truck through the impromptu memorial to the fallen soldiers that had been put up at Crawford? No, it was one of the "Support the Troops" fuckheads showing his true colors: disrupting that memorial was more important than honoring the soldiers. He ground their names into the fucking mud under his tires. Did anyone beat the shit out of him? I fucking doubt it.deeznutz1245 wrote:
All rights get thrown out the window when my nations colors are burned. The only reason something that dispicable is being put on display is so that you freaks can weasle out these kind of reactions out of "us", so you can claim "your" rights are being violated now. Did you stop and think for a second that loved ones of fallen soldiers, airmen, sailors and Marines have nothing to hold onto except that their son/daughter died for something wonderful? People like you think you are doing them justice but it is for nothing other than a fulfillment of self entitlement and ranks up there with Cindy Sheehan's antics.
Interesting that you get this bent out of shape over symbols, yet you think that actual physical violence against actual real people wouldn't provoke an equal or greater response. You're a poor student of both humanity and history and if you ever actually got what you seem to really want right now I doubt you'd enjoy it for long.deeznutz1245 wrote:

How can you criticise Muslims for backward views when you are operating under Middle Ages concepts yourself?

On the subject of burning flags and effigies does anyone remember Muslims 'over reacting' to a cartoon depicting Allah in an offensive light a little while back? At the time a lot of people said "don't over react it's just a drawing" well let's be honest an effigy is just an inanimate object as is a flag, nobody was hurt or attacked here. If you counter this with the argument that it's the symbolism that annoyed you then I sincerely hope you weren't one of the people criticizing Muslims for their protests as that would make you a bit of a hypocrite.hate&discontent wrote:

Last time a seen a video like this it was in Tehran or Palestine and ATG had yet again, another nuclear mushroom cloud in his post. So my question is, is it time to Nuke Portland, shit time to nuke America? Its only a minority of Portland's citizens doing this, just like Tehran. When Palestinians burn an American or Israeli flag its usually after a bunch of kids have been blown to shit from 20 000 ft, so what's making these Americans do this? Few Americans will ask that question. Just label them hippies.

See what I mean? I didn't just "toss" in anything. I was talking about deployments to warzones, so unless you have been there before, that does mean I know more than you on the subject. It wasn't thrown in to shut you up or anything. What the hell is wrong with you? Why is everything a personal attack against you? You just shit out paragraphs of crap without even trying to really understand what the person has said.HunterOfSkulls wrote:

Every VET. deserves respect, they already earned it. the sad thing is that these protesters have the right to protest because VETS. from long ago died so they could have this right, it's a damn shame! if this doesn't make any sense i apologize, it's just that these assholes REALLY piss me off, and i can't think straight. If i didn't have a family, i would be vigilante and rid the country of these scum, then protest at their funerals!! i know i'm an asshole, but that's just my two cents, sorry for wasting your time.
