This is what happens when you and your cohorts kidnap top brass members of the Iranian military. If you didn't see this one coming then you must be blind.

Im going to be very interested in seeing how the UK’s government handles this in the upcoming days.
Iran’s not just going to hand any of the captives over.

This has happened before, three years ago, and didn't cause any ructions then.  There is the danger of it being blown out of proportion and military action being taken but I hope it won't come to that.  I seriously hope we don't use it as an excuse to invade Iran and sort out their nuclear aspirations at the same time.

If you think about it from Iran's standpoint, their actions are logical.  If a foreign power was conducting operations off your coast and you thought they'd strayed into your maritime waters, you'd move to arrest them.  This is what they've done now and what they did back in 2004.  The question is, where precisely were the RN when this happened?

Second question (possibly for when the hostages are released): by what right are the Royal Navy inspecting merchant vessels in international waters, looking for smuggled cars?  Don't they have better things to do?

If I didn't know any better, I would say you are justifying this event.

BASRA, Iraq (Reuters) - Iranian forces seized 15 British Royal Navy personnel who had searched a merchant ship on Friday, Britain said, triggering a diplomatic crisis.

Britain said the incident took place in Iraqi waters, where it routinely boards merchant vessels with UN permission to search them. The Foreign Office summoned Iran's ambassador and demanded the immediate, safe release of the personnel.

"At approximately 1030 Iraqi time (0330 EST) this morning, 15 British naval personnel, engaged in routine boarding operations of merchant shipping in Iraqi territorial waters ... were seized by Iranian naval vessels," the ministry said.

"The boarding party had completed a successful inspection of a merchant ship when they and their two boats were surrounded and escorted by Iranian vessels into Iranian territorial waters," it said in a statement.

"We are urgently pursuing this matter with the Iranian authorities at the highest level and on the instructions of the Foreign Secretary, the Iranian ambassador has been summoned to the Foreign Office. The British government is demanding the immediate and safe return of our people and equipment."

Hopefully this will not be the beginning of escalation. Even if the US detained some soldiers (what is disputed) Iran shouldnt do the same..

So by pointing out the motivation and reasoning behind an act you are automatically justifying it? Why must you be so insistent on never questioning things thoroughly usmarine2007? It's seems as though you find it unpatriotic or something (IMO).

He does not know the reason, unless he is really in the Iran government.

Cameron. there is a difference. those officers were in IRAQ, if a Iranian officer is in iraq we try and capture them, what do you think they are doing? handing out flowers? however these british personal were in Iraqi waters. doing a routine check up on a merchant vessel with no reference to Iran or any activities there

i would also point out even if you think this action is justified, this is a serious problem for both the personnel (thanks for expressing your concern there cameron) and at the international level. this can only mean bad things.

No he does not know the reason but he's allowed to put forward suggestions as to why the Iranians may have done such a thing without being accused of condoning their actions.

And back to the actual topic, America did capture several Iranians a little while back, this incident is not out of the blue or without any ostensible provocation.

PS:I am not necessarily condoning this action either by the way. However if they were indeed inside Iranian waters then the Iranians did have a right to question the Brits activities but hopefully nothing dreadful will happen to those captured and everything will be solved diplomatically.

American provoked it maybe but they didn't capture Americans. It's hard to judge the actions at this point. Obviously it needs to be handled carefully. I think the Iranians know better than to do anything to harm our friends across the pond.

Maybe they thought it safer to take Brits instead of US troops? I think it is probably just more macho bullshit posturing though ...hopefully.

In order to protect the 15 captured Brits, US and UK should negotiate with Iran and exchange prisoners.  Their safety is the most important issue here.  Let's hope this ends without problems.

I say they send in the Royal Marines to rescue them, then bomb the piss out of Iran.

You have serious delusions regarding how much America can take on its plate militarily. Hitler had similar delusions when he took on Russia.
