Where does this policy of intervention stop, you can't fight everyone's war for them. Some nations have to get onto their feet in their own time and in their own way. Let's say Somalia has it's leadership removed and another installed and they turn out to be another Saddam Hussein or Edi Amin, we go back and remove him and keep doing this until they get the right guy in?

The analogy with the world wars doesn't really work either as that was a case of countries attacking other countries, the Somalian situation, like the Iraq situation (this time round, not the first war in Iraq), is/was an internal problem. When sovereign nations are attacked their allies have a right to act IMO.

I'm not saying it's right. I'm just saying I wouldn't really care if it happened.

The problem is that we enter war pretending it's about morals, but really, this all comes down to economics and keeping shit from spreading. The only real concern we have with places like Mogadishu is whether the chaos spreads to an area that matters to us economically. Since that hasn't happened yet, we don't get involved.

If it did, then we'd likely be dropping a lot of bombs over there by now.

Now if we were to just wipe out a their whole population I would be disgusted and ashamed. We may not see eye to eye on this but lets face one thing. They never asked to be born in such a situation. And while it is true that they don't do anything for society, but really what would you like them to do?

I guess I'm just really cynical about any intervention in Africa after we completely bungled Somalia. We're bungling Iraq now too, so I think it's clear that staying out of the Middle East and Africa would be in our best interests -- at least in a military sense.

It's just that when you occupy an area rife with ethnic conflict, you can't really expect the people to want you to be there. So, you have to be willing to kill thousands of people if that's what order requires. That's what Saddam did, and he was effective as a leader as a result.

He was a murderous asshole as well, but at least he was more competent at maintaining order than we've been.
