I tried removing it from steam, then manually deleting the file in the folder but that did not work. The i uninstalled hl2 and that did not work.

Well, this looks like a sign to show you that the HL2 and everything made with it is crappy. One of the most over rated games in history IMO. On to the more helpful side on this post. Do you have another graphics card lying around (I always keep my previous card as a backup)? It may just be a problem with that specific family of cards. Try running HL2 in safe mode (I dont think it has it as I never saw anything like it in my copy).

ok, looked at the pic a bit more, call up Valve about it, they are smart peeps and could probably give you a hand, also try rolling back onto previous driver versions that worked for you. best of luck.

I Googled the error message and found quite a bit of complaints about this problem. Apparently Valve is aware of the problem, but has yet to find a fix for it. New video drivers, DirectX upgrade/reinstall and Valve reinstall all fail to work. Issue also seems to be limited to ATi cards.

You could try downloading and running this to uninstall your ATI video drivers: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Unin … onal.shtml

FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS IN THE README FILE FOR ATI CARDS OR YOU WILL CAUSE MORE HARM THAN GOOD.

Afterwards, go here: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html and install the latest drivers for your video card.

After all of that, you could get CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/ and run the cleanup and registry cleanup that's built into it to see if that helps.
