No cell camera phone posts on blogs. No filming police violence and broadcasting it on youtube.

This seems like a shocking leap towards a police state. What is the goal? Is a crackdown on youth violence about to happen?

The council chose an unfortunate anniversary to publish its decision approving the law, which came exactly 16 years after Los Angeles police officers beating Rodney King were filmed by amateur videographer George Holliday on the night of March 3, 1991. The officers’ acquittal at the end on April 29, 1992 sparked riots in Los Angeles.

If Holliday were to film a similar scene of violence in France today, he could end up in prison as a result of the new law, said Pascal Cohet, a spokesman for French online civil liberties group Odebi. And anyone publishing such images could face up to five years in prison and a fine of €75,000 (US$98,537), potentially a harsher sentence than that for committing the violent act.

What's your unofficial response?
Lol.

Yeah, those wacky Frogs. I remember my dad telling me twenty years ago that France was a socialist-communist country. Today they call it a welfare state.

This does seem rather ominous. Could it be that a crack down on the radical Muslims is in the works and they don't want footage???

I serious wasn't making this to inspire French bashing.

I find this to be a rather extreme restriction of freedom. What gives?

They recently were rated best country to live in (based on health, welfare, work etc) so perhaps they didn't want to be the best and preferred to come second or third.

Oh I say, I just described the English.

And it may become even worse. Our former ministre de l'Intérieur is running for president and seems up to no good, if you ask me.

They've earned it...just because most of the world makes fun of 'em doesn't mean that they had no reason to exist...while we can all laugh (moridly) about the Vichy Republic and such, the French HAVE had several bloody revolutions against their own aristocracy and have "earned it."

yeah, and the first chance they get, they roll over.  and most of their revolutions just replaced one joke with another joke.  they're almost as bad as Italy when it comes to governments.  they choose to live as a wellfare state, that's fine with me.  they have different priorities.

I'm interested here. It says legal action will be taken against websites that host the image, but youtube is an american company if I'm not mistaken, and doesn't have to abide by that law. I wonder what the ICJ will say.

You clearly have no understanding of them or their history or the nature of WWII, so how about you STFU before you embarass yourself further.

The government has also proposed a certification system for Web sites, blog hosters, mobile-phone operators and Internet service providers, identifying them as government-approved sources of information if they adhere to certain rules.
Fucked up much?

Who cares about the french anyway?

They suck at bf2 and wars IRL.

Ever played on a french server? seriously, even the highest ranking players are rubbish.

It's alright for you americans, you live a few thousand odd miles away, I live an hour away on the ferry.

The article said that the purpose is to stop "happy slapping", you know, where some morons decide to attack some random fellow and film it with a camera or phone, then put it on the net.
The whole "don't film police violence" is a bi-effect of this.

But it's still a bad idea. More police patrols would be a better solution, in my opinion.

The country where e-mails can be opened without their owner's agreement by the FBI or whatever ?
Yeah, stick with this.

I agree with ATG's shock to that news, but you have to understand that, while in the US, nobody would cross the line in a queue, in France, the line is there to be crossed. Obviously something you can't conceive.

And we have a REAL freedom of speech. While in the US there is censorship everywhere for 4-letter words (TV, forums etc...) in France, someone can come anywhere and say anything you would translate as "Shit" or "Fuck". This is what WE call FREEDOM of speech. You only have a vague idea of what freedom of speech is.
So there may be some law passed, but people won't consider it legit if it goes against freedom of expression or any kind of liberty.
