http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6421597.stm

Poll results in from BBC World Service - poll is conducted annually, 28,000 survey respondents - here are the top five countries (out of a total of 12) with the most negative image:

1. Israel
2. Iran
3. USA
4. North Korea
5. Russia

Most positive image:

1. Canada
2. Japan
3. EU
4. France
5. Great Britain

The countries surveyed were: Great Britain, USA, France, Poland, Argentina, Canada, Brazil, Chile, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, Lebanon, UAE, India, China, Russia, South Korea, Phillipines, Indonesia, Australia.

Delving into the report itself the following facts emerge:

- 41% of the US respondents view state terrorists Israel positively against 33% who view them negatively.
- The respondents of all European, South American, Middle Eastern and Asian nations (except India) view Israel in a predominantly negative light.

Q. Where, pray tell, does the US get this positive image from? AIPAC really most be working wonders on the US media. This sharp difference of opinion between the US and the rest of the world is quite telling. The US complain that they are hated and yet they can't see through the fact that their support for Israel is why.

- All European nations bar Poland view America in a predominantly negative light. 57% of Great British respondents, interestingly, view the US negatively as against 33% who view them positively. 60% of respondents from another 'war of terror' ally, Australia, also view the US in a heavily negative light.
- The only nations that view the US in a positive light are Poland, Nigeria, Kenya, Phillipines. Not even neighbours Canada or little threatened South Korea view the US positively.

Q. How on earth did the US manage to squander a seemingly limitless supply of sympathy and goodwill in the aftermath of 9/11 to come to be viewed negatively even by its supposed allies in the 'western world'?

Q. The poll shows the British populace have more in common with their European brethren than they allow themselves to let on. Should the Labour Party be taught a lesson it will never forget at the next general election, for acting against the will of the people for so long? Tony Blair has single-handedly made the UK more of a paraia than it was before in the middle east and abroad.

We may not be in the top five, but to the French we're the most loved English speakers!

Of course, given the competition I think the French find it an easy choice.......................

Seriously though, now that we have proof that Iran is viewed worse than the US, can people stop whining about anti-Americanism?

A. Easy. The short memories people seem to accuse Americans of suffering seem to affect most everybody else worldwide as well.

Maybe if we had another Carter in office, we would've merely stuck to finger waggling and sharp words...and kept everybody on our side. And gotten into another hostage disaster anyhow.

I really really really try and stay away from most shit in here, but I have to say this, which is also one thing I have been telling people for years. Whether or not Dubya is a good president or not, whether or not his decisions are correct, the MAN LOOKS LIKE AN IDIOT. Every time that jackass opens his mouth, I fucking cringe at the mockery of pigeon shit he dumps on himself. I wouldn't even care if there was a different president who has the exact same views as him, well maybe a little, but I'm digressing. He should shut his fucking stupid mouth and let someone else make speeches for him, lest America look more educationally challenged. I couldn't even begin to understand how stupid we (americans in general) look to people in other countries, until I started coming here. I honestly am not that surprised.  Fuck me.

It actually is somewhat sad. Bush used to be a good speaker. Now whether it has something to do with the stress of the job or some sort of malady, his words have been immortalized into the Shrine of Everlasting Quayle.

Q. France is the 4th nation (or group thereof) with the best image internationally?  And Australia isn't in the top 5?  Both of those are hard to believe.

How quickly people tend to forget things like:

1) WWI
2) WWII
3) Reconstruction of Europe/Japan
4) Cold War/Communism

Nothing the US has done in the past 15 years warrants a world poll that puts the USA in such negative company.

Look at all those countries that were polled and if you put their collective positive accomplishments from the past 100 years together you would no even come close to what the USA has done for modern civilization.

You want to disagree with US policy.  Fine.  But show some fucking respect and don't group em with Iran and North Korea cause its American money and blood which allows most of us around the world to be where we are today.

Australia wasn't a choice - they were given a choice of 12 different pre-selected nations or entities, Australia not being one of them.

Ok, without bringing that age old debate out, which I agree on some points, I honestly think that a majority of the views(or course this turns into another american debate) very well spawn from dubya, as I said earlier. Am I right remaining countries of the world? What is the root cause of american negativity? Oh fuck it nevermind. I secede from the debate. Blah blah blah foreign policy I'm wrong, blah blah blah, I've been drinking for the past 8 hours.

I'd be curious to see this survey as it has been reported over the last ten years or so. Hoping for a link on the page but that was a fruitless search. However, it's a public opinion poll and I've said it before, "people are stupid."

I don't know who voted for the French, because the Brits sure didn't.

Seriously though I didn't expect the UK to be up there with one of the most positive images.

I tend to dissagree, I went on a tour in Germany and they sppke in GErman the whole time and abused us because they thought we were American. When we finished the tour we said we're Australian and they acctualy gave us our money back coz they were being suck fucktards towards us.

By putting up a pre selected list to form the poll from makes it instantly bias from the off set. So I for one am dismissing it straight off.

In response to Soups post.
The world is very grateful for what America & Americans have done over the last 100 years for us all. Up until the current administration came in, that was at the forefront of every ones minds.
Fact is some of the shit Bush Co. has pulled over the past 12 years have sadly overshadowed the good America has done in the past some what. The OP is misleading, should have read "Countries who's governments policies have the most negative image globally"
Yet another bad added to the administrations ever growing list.
