Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening Community.

I have been looking at HDTV's recently as I am going to buy one at some point. I want to be able to get the best one that I can find and will be looking to by one between £1000 - £1400.

There are a couple that I have been looking at and seem to be good value and good quality. One is an LG 42", the other is a Philips 42" (sorry I don't have the model numbers at this time). This LG comes as a package with a DVD player (possibly a recorder), 5.1 surround sound cinema system and a chrome/glass TV stand. It is a Plasma HDTV with built in digital TV @ £1300.
The Philips 42" is just the TV, but is also HDTV with built in digital TV @ £1200.

I was pretty sure that I would maybe get one of these but then during a conversation with my brother he said that LCD HDTV's are better than Plasma HDTV's, and also said that he does not like LG as they are a bad company, even though I have never had any problems with them.

My dad has a Sony Bravia LCD HDTV but I am not convinced that it is any better than other brands, in fact I would go as far to say that I think his TV is not as good as some of the ones I have seen and that he has just paid the money he did for a name rather than good quality.

So here is what I am looking for. I want anyone who has a HDTV (plasma or LCD) to write a review about which one they have. Maybe include a price (at the time of purchase), quality, value for money, etc... This way you can all help me choose which one to get.

This post has been posted in the Junk Drawer rather than the Tech section because I am not really looking for technically advice, just more of a personal review of what you have or would like to have.

Philips is a great HDTV brand, they always look more crisp than an LG to me.  If you look close at the LG tv, whenever there is a lot of motion going on the image pixilates.

It is seriously the best TV I have ever come across. The 42" at BestBuy costs 1400£

I would recommend using www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com . The Top 10 list is very useful

Well, if you want a plasma HDTV, you should go for Pioneer or Panasonic. However, look for the new Samsung breakthroughs in the plasma industry (you'd be having to wait half a year for them to start trickling into Britain). IF you are going for an LCD, look no further than Samsung. On a further note, Sony make you pay more for something that is of lesser quality to its competitors.
An interesting fact for you, though - a CRT HDTV actually has a better picture quality than a flat-screen (plasma or LCD)!
However, you'll probably want the bit extra space in your living and to sound fancy - so get the flat-screen HDTV (although the CRT HDTVs are pretty thin...)! On personal experience, I'd take the plunge on a Samsung - great, simple styling; superb quality; they have never let me down.

Yeah I did see some really nice Samsungs in the different shops and they look good for their price so I will def consider that make.

I was told something about a new range of HDTV's coming out in august, so maybe they will be better for not having "burn-in's". Although the prices will go up with the new ranges that come out, so will have an even bigger headache if I get one then!!

I have a 40" Sony Bravia 720p LCD and it really rocks.  I got it for $1,300 on a pre-Christmas sale when it was selling for $1,800 in other stores.  I would like to say that you can always count on Sony for quality and service.  I have called Sony customer support for a laptop and 2 digital cameras, all fixed without charge. 

My TV is great hooked up to my computer and also is great for TV.  Standard def leaves a little to be desired, but all singals will hopefully be HD soon, so I can upgrade my cable.  Anyway, I strongly recommend Sony TVs they have great sound and great quality.

Don't let that worry you at all.  Standard def is going to look like crap no matter what TV you buy.  It doesn't look super bad.  It just isn't amazing.  Here is a pic I took of the Discovery Channel a minute ago.  You can see what it looks like.  This is in Wide-zoom mode, where it extends the outer edges of the picture and leaves the middle the same size so things don't look funny.

I have standard cable, just to let you know.  But if you download a HD resolution file off of the net and watch it on your TV, you will be amazed.  That is why I can't wait for HD signals to dominate television.

My TV actually can do both 1080i and 720p.  They are pretty much interchangeable as far as I know.  I play Gran Turismo 4 on PS2 in full 1080i and it looks good, but you can tell its last gen hardware.  Xbox 360 will look amazing on my TV, but I don't have a next gen system yet.  And I'm a PS3 fan, LOL!

Amazingly enough, depending on the kind of eye you have, a 720p output can actually look superior to a 1080i/p output (I forget why, but it was an interesting read)! Truthfully, the quality of picture is nice, but not essential. A recent survey produced the results of 60% of people not being able to tell the difference between SDTV and HDTV. But the bigger screens will be HDTV, so you're stuck with it!

The burn on a plasma is not a big issue anymore and should you get a burn it can be dealt with so that`s no longer a reason to not buy a plasma.

The big difference between a great LCD and a Plasma screen is the level of detail in the black areas and Plasma have the advantage so far and amongst Plasma panels Pioneer is the King without a doubt, save up a little extra and go for the Pioneer Tim, i guarantee you won`t be sorry

Plasma vs LCD

Yeah, the burning is no problem. I have a 42" Hitachi plasma in the "Gaming Room" (great TV btw, take a look at it), where I play PS2 all the time. No problems with the burns. You only burn the TV if you forget to turn it off over the whole week-end or something....

But as Varegg said, Go for the Pioneers... The are the best atm.

The other option you should investigate is DLP. My family owns a 62" Mitsubishi 1080p HDTV. The picture is crisp, has a wider viewing angle than an LCD, and you won't burn anything onto the screen. I highly reccomend looking at Mitsubishi's product.

He says that their LCD tvs are a generation ahead of all other LCD's and that all the downsides which people say about LCD TV's are now out the window, so to say, and that they are better than plasma TV's. Also he said that a Plasma TV will probably not last as long as about 4 years and after this there will be some color problems.

anyone else got anything else to say about this?

Go to you local TV store and look at the LCD's and the Plasma's right next to each other to make your decision on picture quality. Then go home and enjoy your new LCD.

It's the difference between liquid and gas.

For the same size TV LCD's are little bit more pricey though.

The problem with Plasma televisions, is that they use gases to produce the picture on screen. Eventually, those gases will dissipate and you'll have to spend a good amount of $$ to get your television refilled. As the gas dissipates, the picture will go with it, obviously. My grandfather bought a 63" Plasma a few months ago, and he told me if you accidentally tilted it to one side horizontally, it would ruin the television and you'd have to spend a load to get it fixed.

720p looks better because it can handle fast moving sequences in films/sports better. Most sports shown in HD, like on ESPN, are shown in 720p because of this advantage. At 1080i, you're more likely to get blurring when something shoots across the screen. Anyone that can't notice the difference between SD and HD are freaking retarded, seriously. How can you not tell the difference?



All in all, a DLP tv is probably the best. 60,000 hour bulbs will last a long time and the picture is amazing. Check with your local tv stations and see if they broadcast OTA (over-the-air) HD content. If so, buy a $10 antenna, hook it up to your antenna in input, program your tv, and enjoy HD for free. That's what I do. I get all the local channels in HD for free. Lost, Heroes, Prison Break, CSI, Grey's Anatomy, ER, Smallville, etc etc etc. I'll never go back to SD.
