I'm curious to find out what its like in the forces, so i was wondering if any of you could share some experiences with us all. What you did in the forces and what you thought of being in the forces.

Cheers.

some quotes related to Chesty Puller (Wikipedia):
"All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us...they can't get away this time."

"We’re surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them"

"Remember, you are the 1st Marines! Not all the Communists in Hell can overrun you!"

"Take me to the Brig. I want to see the real Marines."

"Alright you bastards, try and shoot me!" (to Korean forces)

"Where do you put the bayonet?" (upon seeing a flamethrower for the first time)

"You don't hurt 'em if you don't hit 'em."

At 18 i joined the dutch red barrets. We started the training with 190 guys, that made it though the application tests and about 25 guys actually made it though the course. After 6 months training of training, i was sent to another army unit and became a gunner specialist in a recon platoon for an armoured infantry battalion. I havent seen real combat but i ve trained for it for about 2,5 years. I m trained as a combat medic, spotter for arti, i sent hours in huge simulators and did live fire exercizes. My sergeant was a sniper instructor at the green barrets so i got some sniper training as well. We made our own guilly suits and had to do shit like: my serge would sit on a chain on a small hill in a open spot in the forrest of about 150 m across having a bino and a radio. We spit up in 2 man teams and every team's mission was to get within 50 meters of the target, aim and call him on the radio, without getting seen. We got seen and sent back 3 times and after that we got the hang of it. Every time you got sent back, it was like 200m of crawling again. We did tons of crazy shit, going behind enemy lines to look for the enemy base in excercizes etc.

To give you a clue of what these 6 months or basic training were like. My instructors were old green barrets or old marines. Its like they ll always find something wrong somewhere and then the whole platoon or group had to repeat the whole thing and this just goes on and on. You get about 3/4 hours of sleep a day. We marched distances of 25 km's in 3 hours and 15 minutes carrying about 50 kg of gear. It was winter time and if 1 guy out of like 50 guys lost a glove, the rest of the guys in the whole platoon werent allowed to wear gloves. I was thought the safety instructions for my personal weapon, which is a pretty simple process of unloading your rifle and checking the chamber but we had to repeat this for 4 hours while laying down in the rain in some nice puddle they found for us. This stuff went on for 6 months.

I have had a whale of a time so far.
I joined the army 9 years ago, started off driving Challenger 2, eventually started gunning one.  Now i am a Challenger 2 commander who has diversified a little and i now teach Communications Informations Systems.  Its a good little number.  Been to 3 war zones and was shot at in 2 of them, but its amazing what a man will do for a little ribbon!!  Apparently.

Wow, what's it like on this inside having a 125mm SABOT hitting ypur tank? I mean yeah, i don't think any of the Iraqi tanks managed to penetrate a C2 but they must've tried... one big headache?

Tank combat really is brutal...

It was actually a guy with a pistol came towards the tank and fired 2 shots at me, missed me both times and then got filled in by my colleagues on the ground for his trouble.
