It occured to me that our biggest threat is technology, not extremists.

People willing to sacrifice their lives for their cause is not a new thing in history.  The only problem is that as technology evolves, the damage that a relatively small group of people can inflict become exponentially larger.

Today the danger is for extremists to get their hands on nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.  As time passes the destructive powers of technological advances will only increase, even if those advances are for legitimate science based purposes.  How long before technology advances too far and makes mass destruction too simple?

If you think I exagerate consider this: I studied biochemistry and molecular biology in college and from my experience in research labs i can tell you that creating multiple-antibiotic resistent strains of bacteria is quite simple...only question is can you get your hands on 'last line of defence" antibiotics which are closely gaurded. I'm sure similar things are possible at the moment in other areas and will be even more dangerous in the future.

Intent I believe is the true decider to your question. Technology isn't the enemy, the dark side of humanity is.

I once read that if the moon was to be destroyed, then the world would end. I then thought "If some people could get the technology, they could threaten to do this, and end us all..."

I suppose my thoughts match up to your main point, some day this technology will be available to some bad people, and they could blow up the moon...

Those willing to commit atrocities represent a very very small minority of humanity.  Unfortunately there will always be one out of a thousand who will want to cause destruction.  Even if the people willing to do this is very small, with enough time and with technology advancing as it does the "perfect storm" will eventually come where you will arrive at a situation where a dangerous technology will fall into the hands of that small percentage of humanity which you call the "dark side".

We'll never be able to control this small element of humanity.  Diversity is one of humanity's defining characteristics so dangerous minorities will always exist.  The question is whether this extremely small minority should have the ability of causing such massive destruction.
