Why? I believe that intent is as important as action. Osama Bin Ladens' group kills civilians, yes. But so have countless nations throughout history. Osama's aim is basically the same as theirs: to gain land. In his case, to create a Muslim superstate (essentially a Muslim dominate version of the US).
Fred Phelps also champions the murder of civilians, but he does it purely due to bigotry.
Do I support either of them? No. But at least Osamas' aim is more reasonable.

The more power you have, the more capability to convey good (or evil) you have. The Pope does have a fair amount of influence over a large number of people, maybe more so than any other individual human being.
One could argue that the Pope's failing to renew the Catholic church's standing on issues like birth control and abortion has brought on more suffering in the world than any other living person's actions (or inactions, in this case).
