SANTA FE, New Mexico (AP) -- Three CD players hidden under a cathedral's pews blared sexually explicit language in the middle of an Ash Wednesday Mass, leading a bomb squad to detonate two of the devices.

Authorities determined the music players were not dangerous and kept the third one to check it for clues, said police Capt. Gary Johnson.

The CD players, duct-taped to the bottoms of the pews, were set to turn on in the middle of noon Mass on Wednesday at the Roman Catholic Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.

The recordings, made on store-bought blank discs, featured people using foul language and "pornographic messages," Johnson said. He would not elaborate because of the ongoing investigation.

Church staff members took the CD players to the basement and called police, who sent the bomb squad, Johnson said.

The bomb squad blew up two players outside and kept the third one to test for fingerprints or DNA and trace its components, he said.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, which marks a 40-day period of fasting and penitence before Easter.

Would you consider this a waste of resources by the police?

How stereotypically over the top.

You say over the top.  But if they hadn't treated it seriously and it blew up, you would say the were incompetent.

True, though it was a chance to practice, it really was a waste of resources.  I think the bomb squad is starting to get overused on petty shit, i.e. think back to Boston and the ATHF signs...  now cd players!  Oh noes!  The cd inside might be a bomb!

Why didn't they try to keep all three for evidence?

Well they decided it was safe enough to keep one for evidence. Why were the other two so threatening?

There was a possiblilty they were booby trapped.  Here where I live, someone booby trapped a tear gas grenade to go off in IHOP.  You never know...
However, the thing in Boston was just stupid.  After realizing that two weren't bombs, common sense would have said stop but I guess every city wants to have its big terrorist scare.

Surely that's a harmless prank...  after all, tear gas is "safe" enough for the police to use on protesters, etc.

Why are people so dense?

With bomb attacks going off all over the world you have the audacity to question how the situation was handled.

I'm reasonably confident that none of the bomb attacks around the world played CD's that swore at people. Perhaps if it told them to convert to Islam before their deaths you might think that, but that was quite clearly a prank. That, and if they wanted to bomb a church, they'd just bomb it, and not bother warning everyone out of the church with swearing CD players.

I don't think they did anything wrong here. Who knows? Perhaps they could have had a small charge attached to the player that would have gone off after say, track 5 played or something like that?

So they blew up 2 of the 3. Now they will use the 3rd, catch the idiots who planted them, and we can move on.

Thank God they blew those things up! Makes me feel a bit safer, though I quake in my boots after the Assault Weapons ban expired. I mean, now that THAT's gone drive-by bayonet stabbings have gone up tenfold!

=/

Waste of resources, sure be on the safe side but I think it was nothing more than a prank by some high schoolers.
