(Australia) The inefficient standard light bulb could be phased out within three years to save up to 800,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

The federal Environment Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, is expected today to announce a commitment to phase out incandescent light bulbs by 2009-10, a world first by a national government.

It hopes to convince state and territory governments to introduce energy performance standards that would lead to the replacement of standard light bulbs with more efficient but more expensive alternatives such as compact fluorescent lights. It will also negotiate with manufacturers to phase out the bulbs.

I guess this is a good thing, it'll save me a ton of money on electricity. More importantly, this is the first real policy indicating that the Australian government - the only developed nation other than the US to not adopt Kyoto - is beginning to take climate change seriously.

Thats been all over the news here, now it looks likely that we'll adopt it too.

Incandescent bulbs are shit anyway.  If you buy the cheap ones they're forever blowing, and the good ones are almost as much as the eco bulbs!

Big step, changing light bulbs.

FFS, do you know how companies buy permission to pollute from the govt, do you know how much water and energy they waste?

They bring it back to the sad punter, who can only buy whats on the shelf anyway, and the cheaper stuff is less efficient energy-wise. Are there subsidies or discounts on the cleaner gear for the average Joe?

Its all very well for us to make an effort, but who's doing something about the larger part of the problem?

Why does everything have to be about global warming these days? Fuck climate change, think of the resources saved and air quality.

That's true, but if you don't talk about climate change who's going to take you seriously?

If the extra dollar you're going to spend on the more efficient light bulb is that much of an issue for you, you have much bigger financial worries than the price of light bulbs. Not to mention that you'll get that money back in savings on your electricity bill.

What's your problem with taking small steps towards efficiency? If you were in pain, wouldn't you rather take a mild analgesic rather than none at all? Every little bit helps. It's like that quote, "no single raindrop believes it caused the flood."

Actually... I like the idea. Those powersaving bulbs have become way cheaper and if you install them they save 20€/year - only one of them. If you replace all the 'normal' ones with the energy-saving-wonders you can save quite a lot of power. Good for the environment and good for your purse. But I guess there wont be a law in germany for that because our government is way too slow, when it comes to drastic changes.
However I think everyone with a little sense for environment does not need a law like that, to make such changes.

Here's a way to reduce CO2 emmisions:
Piss off Brown Coal Powerplants, ie. Hazelwood, the 'Dirtiest Powerplant In The World'. Even if we reduce how many KWh's we take out of it, there's still a mega-arse powerplant sitting there, so what's the damn point?

What's that? Replace Hazelwood with Wind Power. Oh wait we can't do that, Wind Power isn't good for our local ecology, plus they're 'ugly'.

Fine, we'll take the power from Tasmania, they have enough Hydroelectric dams to power the entire South-Eastern states. Oh wait, power-lines cause electrical interference in the ocean and are 'ugly'.

Yes, 'ugly' is one of their defensive statements AGAINST clean power. Apparently they haven't seen the gaping hole through the plumes of smoke lately.

Please tell me they aren't this stupid where you are.

at least in germany 2 nuclear powerplants could be shut down, if everyone changed to power-saving lightbulbs - so it's certainly not entierly useless. and aside from that, it has to start *somewhere* - so why not with this move?

The problem with that, however, is that nuclear is not non-renewable (ie. it's renewable). Any oil/gas/coal plants available for decommission?

I'm cool with this, but not with my downlights. I have about 14-16 downlights in the house, and fluro downlights are absolutely shit. I'll have to stock up on incandescent ones...

I hate those compact flourescents. I have two in my basement and I'm always at somewhat of a jog while going down the stairs. I flip the switch and proceed to the bottom of the stairs but the bulbs don't turn on until they get all warmed up so I pretty much turn around every day thinking the bulb is out or that I missed the switch.
