TBH I don't have any problem with countries which require immigrants to learn their language, on the condition that they provide appropriate language schools.

Yes, amazing that they won't assimilate into a culture where people call them "fuckin mexies" and talk about trashing their businesses and vandalizing their property over the effort it takes to sound out some words. Good for you, striking a blow for freedom by refusing to clearly speak your order and plotting criminal action against them.Dezerteagal5 wrote:

Err that pisses me off so much. They barge into this country and expect us to adapt to them! bullshit
Here's a hint. If you don't want to do business with them, DON'T FUCKING EAT THERE. You know what pisses me off? Whiners that complain about having to sound out a word or two for someone who may not understand the noise issuing from between their Cheetos-stained lips, or bitch about having to press 1 for English like it's some sort of massive hardship to push one more fucking button on the phone. If it's so fucking tough, they should go get a Big Mac where you can just point at the menu pictures and grunt, don't call tech support for anything.
The gall of this really annoys the shit out of me. The same people who call Mexicans (or at least people they think are Mexican) "wetbacks", "beaners" and all kinds of other shit then turn around and complain when they don't assimilate. WTF do you expect? No one is going to want to be an active, participating member of a society if the society views them and everyone like them as worthless trash. They're going to give you a big fat "fuck you, Jack" at every opportunity and I don't blame them.
But please, go ahead, keep hysterically screaming about "Reconquista" and talking about harrassing Mexicans. Meanwhile the business owners that give American jobs to illegal immigrants and the politicians cutting trade deals that make life for an average worker or farmer in Mexico nearly impossible will keep laughing at you all the way to the bank.
Delta4Bravo, you dutch have got your shit together! Sensible drug policies...sensible immigration policies
Better hope they don't make it retroactive, else they'll be shipping most of the population back to europe.Flaming_Maniac wrote:

Very well put, but on the other hand, there are some illegals who refuse to learn English, and will not even try. I know that I am tired of going into McDonald's ording my meal, then hear it repeated in Spanish, and my stuff not be correct. How hard is it to not put onions on my burger? Also, you forgot to mention that there schools provide classes to learn English. My senior year of high school, I choose to take Spanish, not because I needed to, I already had two years of Latin, something that was preping me for college since I was wanting to be an archologist at the time. Anyways, I took Spanish, and the first hour class was English for Spanish speaking students. We had over 100 teachers quit that year just because of that group of students. I remember going to class in sixth hour without having a teach, why because the first hour class made the teacher cry and quit her job, make that 100 teachers do that. Did I learn anything that year? Nothing useful, other then to say that I do not understand Spanish in Spanish. Was it our fault, no. If the students in the first hour class learned to act then I would know some Spanish. Probally enough that we could at least communicate somewhat between the two languages. Now, I will have to pay additional money to learn Spanish, because of 20 something stupid kids who could not act properly for 45 min. Should I have to learn Spanish, in my book, no. I took the steps to learn it, but could not because of the kids of the illegals. I know that most Mexicians are not like that, but that the way they act in my city. Tell them to show up for a job at 9:00 AM, they maybe there at noon, or when ever they feel like it.HunterOfSkulls wrote:

Very good points as well. There are a number of illegals in my city that behave in similar ways. Thankfully, the Mexicans here are typically more polite though.dubbs wrote:

I don't wanna sound racist here, but the rudest Hispanics I've ever met were all Cuban. It seems like most of them have some chip on their shoulder. They are the ones that need to get deported before anyone else.
I definatly agree. I hope the US thinks about this too. It pisses me off to see people who have been here 20 or more years and not be able to put together one proper sentence in english.

Just to address some stuff upthread, yeah, some immigrants are assholes. But that ignores the fact that some people are assholes. Being a stupid jackstain doesn't confine itself to one particular ethnicity or culture. Sometimes we notice assholes who don't physically blend into the background of our particular environment more, but that's our own ingrained human pattern-finding instincts talking. I've actually had the opposite experience to dubbs; nearly all the Mexican folks I've worked with have sometimes come close to making me look lazy. They haul ass from the time they get to the job until it's time to go home. By contrast a lot of the regular Americans I've worked with have been lazy fuckabouts who "Hollywood" their way though the day, meaning they only act like they're working, which drives me nuts. I can't stand working with anyone who isn't going to do anything but goof around and expect to get paid for it. But those examples aside, I know it's not the whole of the picture, just my little piece of it.
As far as the business owners and politicians, you really won't see them get brought up much in a discussion of immigration. It is FAR easier to focus on and rag on the people who just come here to try and make a living because they can't crack through the corruption and foreign influence at home than it is to take corporations and politicians to task. It's the same reason that American businesses employ illegals; they can be abused with impunity because all it takes is one phone call to INS to get rid of anyone who actually stands up to them. These people are mainly powerless, so they're a tempting target, far more tempting that a rich business owner or politician, those last two don't take kindly to average folks daring to question them. So dimwits like the Minutemen make themselves famous by putting on their cammies and chasing after dehydrated and hungry people crossing the border instead of camping out outside the headquarters of businessmen and politicians. They spread rehashed white supremacist propaganda about how Mexicans are full of diseases and inherently criminal instead of asking why the US government seems to want to put the whole of Mexican farming operations in the grave. They talk about building a wall while the government talks about building a superhighway. It's all such a sad, sick sham.
Hunter... I think I'm going to write you in for president in '08. LOL...
Great points regarding the Minutemen in particular....

Not a big fan of the Minutemen or any of their permutations. They're equal parts bullies and racist thugs, the racists just having found a mainstream-acceptable format to spew their crap. It really is scary how their rhetoric perfectly mirrors past nativist/racist movements and even scarier how many people just accept what they say without looking into it.
My ancestry is 3/4 German and 1/4 Swedish. I speak neither Swedish or German. You'll also find that most ancestry in the U.S. is not English. Quite frankly if you move anywhere and don't attempt to learn the language the people there speak, you're a lazy selfish prick.
I completely agree with this idea.
It sounds pretty fair. If they want to go there they should at least learn the language.usmarine2007 wrote:

Language and culture is essential to learn when moving to another country, there should be a contract where you admit to learn both before you can get a work permit and or a citizenship !
So a step by step program where the different completed steps grants you new benefits in your new country ending with a full citizenship of course !

Well hell, while we're at it we should pile on the Amish too. They speak Pennsylvania Dutch. Those fuckers are bringing the rest of us down, and you know they won't be on here to defend themselves so let's really take it to 'em. What do you say?!?
Back to reality. As the son of Mexican immigrants I won't say anything that hasn't already been said by Hunter. You should have seen my plus one already. Thanks. Furthermore I agree that anyone who is going to a different country should try to lean something about that country first. A good place to start is language.
Here's the dilemma in the US. European immigrants didn't always speak English when they arrived. In most cases it took three generations for the native language to be erased. With our proximity to Latin America this process may take longer. Geography alone will have an effect on the strength of the bonds with our various countries of origin.
In the mean time if any of us want real change in regard to this issue, we should take a strengths based approach. We should support reform instead of punishing individuals. Want to end illegal immigration . . . support economic reform in the target countries. Want to hear more people speak English . . . support increased availability of ESL programs. The bottom line is that deportation and imprisonment will do nothing to solve the problems we have with these issues.

In Austria they introduced a new law recently. Too gain a citizenship besides the standard requirements now you have to pass an German language exam and also Austrian history and culture. Only than can you get a citizenship. They are linient (I think thats the word) to old people since, lets face it, you cant teach an old horse new tricks
Also when I first came to Austria I had to pass an German language exam before I could start college. Its not a extreemely hard exam. You get 3 semestars (a year and a half) to pass that exam. If you dont make it you wont be able to extend your "greencard" anymore.
Its a pretty good law.
