As did the Spanish, the Portuguese, the Romans.. pretty much most of Europe did.  However, as was then, we have progressed further and faster than the rest of the world and while we live in an enlightened world, we can't be too surprised if the developing "baby" nations, such as North korea, Israel, the USA, etc. want to do what we did so many centuries ago.

Okay here it goes...

The reason everyone goes on about America and its rights and wrongs is because for starters it is the worlds only remaining super power but beyond that in the last 80 or so years through the power of TV and to a greater degree film America has made a point of 'selling' the rest of the world 'the American Dream'. The amount of people in America who have arrived from other countries with concepts of America based largely on what they've seen in films would surprise you. I have a bartender friend who moved to America to live in New York after watching Cocktail (I'm serious!).

People in every part of the world grow up with American movies and as a result can identify with American culture, we don't grow up with Chinese films or even French movies (even though in my opinion France is the spiritual home of cinema and make the best films in today's movie world) and so we don't feel the same natural affinity towards these countries. As a child i loved American movies and actors and for many years dreamed of one day maybe living in America. With age however I have come to realise that the real America isn't all that the movies and TV make it out to be. I do like what America is supposed to be about (freedom, pursuit of happiness, equality, the idea that anyone can make it to the top if they work hard etc.) but in reality America is not really made up of these qualities. It is unfortunate that the American dream is just that ...a dream. A great concept that hides the harsher reality.

Many people also probably feel the desire to comment on America so much because it meddles so frequently in other countries business, I'm not saying they're the only country that does this but they do like to chip in their 10cents more than most.

Probably because America to lectures the rest of the world on human rights, fiscal policies, weapons of mass destruction etc and they cant even look after their own backyard. People get sick of being lectured by hypocrites.

Funny, Americans have been told in this forum that they have little to no culture. Now we are told how others identify with it. Not you in particular Braddock, but we have heard that song before.

There are plenty of fulfilled dreams in this country as well. It is not dormant in the imagination. The whole nation is a dream realized. America is what it is today because we are products of the immigrant spirit and the pioneer mentality. All of our ancestors took a chance on a dream.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superpower

Wiki has a definition:

"A superpower is a state with the first rank in the international system and the ability to influence events and project power on a worldwide scale"

Economic Power     Comparative GDP size? Role in world trade?
Military Power     Force projection capability? Troop size? Naval size?
Political Power     Influential foreign policy? UN leadership?
Cultural Power     Role of history? Worldwide art, music, film?

China probably lacks the cultural influence

Well said... +1.

Despite what many might think, this is not an "America is the Greatest" thread (even though America is the greatest).  It was an honest question, and I appreciate this honest answer.

It is just that I watch the news and read the papers and generally try to stay informed, but I still dont give a damn about what is going on in most of the rest of the world.

If it doesnt directly affect me, I try not to care.  Call it selfishness, or call it focusing on the reality of my own life and the things I can actually change; whatever.  But I have never understood exactly why people would want to follow the happenings of America.  I dont care what is happening in South Africa.  Sadly, I dont really even pay close attention to what is happening in the Sudan etc.  I didnt, however, grow up watching South African movies.  Maybe it is largely the power of the media.
