Simple way to solve this problem for yourself...

...do you need more networking capability, or do you need more media-related stuff?

What would fall under "Networking"?. All i do on my computer is play games listen to music and watch movies. And its the main comp with the router.

Basically anything to do with servers and network authentication, Domains, PXE-boot, etc. If you haven't heard of it you probably don't use it hence don't need support for it.

Well. Are you buying them? Then go with Media. Unless your wiring 20 computers together, you dont need pro. There are no signifigant differences between the 2 unless your networking largely.

I looked at a Mac today. It was $3000. It had a 7300GT and 1GB DDR2-667. Am I supposed to be impressed?

How about Ubuntu?

*gangraped by Windows fanboys*

Actually, I've never used Linux, but I heard it's good.  And free.

I'm 80% sure you can't remote/RDP into Media Center. IMO don't limit yourself, get pro.

Actually the 1 significant difference   is that XP pro comes with the ability to remote desktop into it, something i do regularly.  MCE does not.  so if you use rdt, pro is the only way to go. (unless you install some 3rd party app like vnc but it's shit compared to rdt)

You can download the Windows Remote Desktop feature from the microsoft database

I have Windows MCE with a TV tunar card installed.  The card allows me to hook cable TV up to the computer.   I am able to watch, pause, and rewind live TV.  In essence it is also a DVR.  It is set up to record TV shows that I watch on a weekly basis.  ***Record movies from the movie channels and put them on DVD.***  I only have MCE 2002 since I didn't pay $10 for the upgrade to 2005 it wont let me install Windows Media Player 11.  11 isn't compatible with MCE 2002 only 2005 which is all you can buy now anyway. As far as XP Pro and the networking or the Remote to Desktop abilities I know very little about.

Edit -->  (***) MCE 2002 does not burn to DVD.  I import files to seperate program called "Click to DVD".

I would say go with a Linux version and if you don like it then go with MCE.  I have been thinking about getting a cheap motherboard, cpu, HD, etc just to put linux on so I don't screw up my everyday computer by trying to partition the HD. I have been wanting to build a rig for a while and also wold like to build a cheap one first in case I screw things up.  Call it a learning computer.

I have to get back to Media Center and finish watching "The Departed".  About halfway through and it's pretty kick ass so far.

P.S. Add yourself a good sound card and surround sound speakers to the MCE CPU and you have a small home theatre system.
