So I've come under the assumption that DICE now hates aircraft, based on level design and after what they put us through in BF2.  Anti-air everywhere, Walkers are death squads for aircraft, and I've recently been getting pissed off about the SAAW-86 AA launcher.  Doesn't mean I haven't gotten even, though; when used properly, a gunship can make a killing blow on any vehicle in a single volley and with a competent gunner.

So in my opinion, aircraft need to stay as-is, except drastically reduce the respawn time.  Waiting 90 seconds for any vehicle (except walkers) is just plain silly.  And maybe a bit more armor so walkers don't chew them up so quickly.  Everything else, is fine, and heres why:

*TV missile fixed in 1.10 patch so you can bulls-eye targets.  You need a steady hand though, because its nowhere near as easy as it was in BF2.

*One full pilot volley kills a tank; most of the time when I get straffed, I never see it coming, and even if I get my shields up, they'll nail me in the next pass more than likely, unless I pull some desperate measures (pepper with Tank HMG, land a tank shell in their cockpit, etc).  Same thing for APC's and other gunships, but sometimes the missiles zonk out and miss completely; that pisses me off.

*These suckers can maneuver something fierce; not the same dogfighting as in BF2, but of a different variety where running isn't the only option if you're being tailed.

So anyone else think anything needs to be changed, Make the Talon the new J-10?  Or should things stay is, fine-n-dandy balanced?  Discuss...go!

i LoL'ed at the first part about Dice hating aircraft. well its not all bad, you kinda have to be more aware of your surroundings and not go sight-seeing with the enemy walker ready to chew you up. i think they are fine and hopefully they wont go crazy with the nerfing like they did in BF2. its all for the most part, fine as is. but you know how Dice will find the whiniest group of people for the suggestions, and hence ruin it for everyone else.

The only way to combat a walker, in my opinion, is with remote missiles. (Or as they're incorrectly called: TV guided missiles.)

I'm sure gunships would be able to take ou walkers in one volley if they weren't forced to fire at the most heavily armored part of it.

But yeah, I really like the skill it takes to use a gunship. It's definatly something I like to use, and I usually use it to back up the ground forces, and of course taking out other aircraft. It makes you feel like the few and the proud to get a decent amount of kills using gunships.

if they make it so you can fly upside down( easily without the death lockup) then i would play with it alot more

I'd like to see that.  Unless I'm up really high, doing a barrel roll is death.  If you have enough altitude, you can just pull up out of it.

the only thing they need to fix is the sudden lock of death you get sometimes, it's not when you fly straight, but sometimes while you are straight and isn't like rolling or anything then the gunship rolls over and you crash. and they need to fix the hitboxes so that you can hit a gunship that is flying straight all the time.

I think there already a damn close to J10 standards... aside from that the only think I think that needs changing is more armour and the AA needs a shorter range

That´s exactly whats so cool about 2142. You don´t get bombed all the friggin time, like in Bf2, just because the enemy team has a decent pilot. Aircraft are no longer that important to win a round. And you can handle them pretty well, according to flying as well as taking them down.

TV guided missiles can go well past 300 meters (targets are marked on the viewscreen up to that range), but unfortunately beyond that range you have to be really good not to miss your target.  I've been practicing with some clan members and a few other competent pilots, and if you can land a hit, odds are you'll kill said vehicle if the pilot opens up too.  About 90% of the time, they don't raise their shields, so your odds of success, if you can line it up, are actually pretty good.  My advice is to lower the aircraft sensitivity for mouse controls, if you find it difficult.  And need I mention VOIP, it pwns?

Overall, 2142 is very well balanced.  I hope they don’t mess with anything, including aircraft.

As Sisco said, I’m not getting bombed every minute by one good pilot like in BF2, so I’m perfectly content with aircraft the way they are right now.  Personally, I enjoy the infantry focus with some fun vehicles and aircraft to use along the way.  I hope 2142 never has powerful aircraft like BF2.  In 2142, a skilled pilot can get kills but is still vulnerable to the right combination of firepower – it should stay that way.  I have yet to experience anyone whoring the gunship and if the gunship pilot gets lazy, I’ll take him down with my main tank gun.

With over 60K points, you must be.   I don't have time to play for several hours each night anymore or I'd have waaaay more points.  On the weekend I can usually get a good 3-5 hours on Saturday, but weekdays I can only play 1-2 days and that's only for 1-3 rounds depending on how long they last.  Plus, I just fly the transport and let the better pilots have the gunship.  In BF2 I got tired of people yelling at me because I couldn't fly or gun very well.  How was I supposed to get better if I didn't get a chance to fly?  Anyway, got pretty good at TVing.  Now TVing is very different so I don't bother.  I'm content as a groundpounder with my tank.

i think its pretty well balanced as it is. the engi AA unlock doesnt get used much so its fair to have the huge range. however i dont think the mounted AA's need to have that extreme range on their EMP. i mean, one guy on an AA in the middle of Sidi, and they can practically stop u at any silo.

i have like 45 hours of flying the gunship, and can usually get my gunner a good 35+ kills per round, with only a couple deaths

i say keep it as it is, and if the mechs are pissing u off, go fly on maps like Suez Canal - thats gotta be the best titan map

I practiced offline, opening my own LAN game. Did it more with Bf2 though, cause I was new to the hole flying shit back then .

Still, a few hours offline (first alone, than pwning stupid bots) gives you a good basic skill.

And after that, just fuck the stupid morons yelling at you on public servers. They started there as well and if you hit something once in a while it´s perfectly fine.

I got round to use my gunner as my main weapon, if he´s capable . I just suck at aiming with the unguided rockets, so I let my sidekick do the dirty work.

I dunno...something about Aircraft in 2142 just makes me want to cringe and vomit. Somehow it's not the same as Bf2, which disappoints me quite a bit.

Maybe if they had just one map, just one that had some form of futuristic jet in it would make me have a wet dream.

If you ask me, Choppers are fucked in 2142, they need to make them slightly like the ones in BF2.

The only thing that needs to be changed is the Talon hitbox. Its unfair that the Doragon is a magnet for missiles while they bounce off the Talon most of the time. People who say they should be able to fly upside down should think for a second. The engines are VTOL. If you are upside down, the engines are pointed towards the sky. Besides, if u know what to do, you can right yourself as long as you are above 125 feet. The fact that they are not like jets in bf2 is a good thing. Jet whores were the worst part of bf2, even worse than the tv missile chopper whores. The lack of bombs is a good thing. I still own tanks all the time. I am an uber gunship whore, 233rd in the world last time I checked. They rock. People who complain about EMP should try another vehicle I almost never get killed by AA fire or EMP it is either a SAAW, an enemy gunship or my own idiocy smacking into a tree or something like that. The SAAW range is a bit ridiculous it should be lowered by about 100 feet, and the Doragon's ADS should be fixed so that the tail doesn't stick out. No way to defend against the SAAW the way it is now. Besides that, gunships rule.

Good point there, if a pilot is competent enough to stay away from the trouble spots (or better yet, line up their gunner for a TV strike on the nearest AA site), gunships can rack massive kills.  Unfortunately, its impossible to avoid all the AA sites; only the truly skilled get that sixth sense and avoid all danger.  Me, I spent a couple days helping line my gunner up at the silo on top of Shuhia Taiba, racking up kills on morons stupid enough to keep podding in, and hit the gas when trouble found me.

To deal with walkers, you can do the following:

1.  run
2.  combine fire with the gunner and put him down with one full volley and a TV missile at the legs
3.  RDX your nose and ram the little shithead if you're recon.  At top speed in a kamikaze dive, you'll get him before he gets you, hopefully.

please see my gunship guide for damage stats.

http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=55161

one tv missile does 69 damage sooooooooo it is not hard to take out the walker with one pass. 6 more missiles after that will do it. Just gotta not get EMPed first, which is easier said than done if the walker pilot has a clue.

and check this post for how pwnerific (so close to bonerific) the gunship can be.

Decrease the emp range by 20% and I'll be happy.

Gunship tips:
Avoid walkers like the plague(unless they are busy/engaged with your teams armor)

Stay low to the ground and keep plenty of objects between you and emp.

If there is a sustained emp lock, then climb.

When engaging armor, climb in altitude and come down right on top of them.(saves you from getting chopped up from the chaingun.

GUNSHIPS ARE NOT FOR CAPPING SILOS/FLAGS!-unless you your team around it and already capping

For those who play titan, go after enemy gunship immediately at start of round and always be aware of when they respawn. Dominate the enemy gunship and everything else is a breeze. Unless of course multiple people are using the SAAW. - in which case, YOU'RE FUCKED.

If they brought down the Range of the EMP's a bit, and made the shield's actually work agains the AA guns/EMP, I'd be really happy.  Other than that, the Gunship is fine.  Deadly, but not invincible.

In response to Squirrel:

1) No real arguments, although sometimes if they're engaged, their gunner isn't...

2) I disagree, keeping high makes it easier to spot the enemy gunship(s), as well as avoid the Stray Tank Round.  Just dive down when you spot something or a tammate spots a vehicle.  The Exception to this would be on Sidi, where there's AA EVERYWHERE, and your only hope is low and fast.

3) No Argument

4) I've been killed way more times by the main gun then the chaingun.  I say come straight and hard so they can't get a good track on you before you exceed their max gun elevation. They shouldn't survive more than one salvo anyway.

For the first two weeks the game was out, I was in the top 200 of Gunship Pilots.  Then I got kinda distracted, so my rank has dropped quite a bit.

There is always the kamikazi option or nearly, I remember one time I was flying a tranport jet and there was and enemy gunship( it had 2 people ) so I move forward to ram it and I ejected out of my jet just in time and I got those 2 crewman, and I survived, wish I knew how to record and make videos because that would be worth looking at again and to help noob pilots too on kamikaziing or nearly.
The irony of guns, is that they can save lives.

i go for the gunship first on titan mode, and if i get it i kinda stalk around the enemy titan till i find their gunship. once i see it i follow it for a while, one its going straight ahead or hovering, i unload all ma missles *NOTE* dont try and hit the other gunship while its turning.
