Not to get too far off topic, But what is with the whole french surrender thing?  First off, when Germany invaded France they skirted around the Maginot line, the only defensive fortification between them and Germany which had cost them their entire military budget.  Granted this defense was a joke and poorly planned from the beginning.  But the fact is the were overrun in days, and could have kept fighting, but would have lost a lot of citizens [edit] civilians [/].  Everyone seems to not mind the fact that Italy didn't even try to resist.  They just let whoever wanted to rule them in to do what they wanted.

I really don't care one way or the other, I'm not a big fan of the french nor french myself.  I just heard a joke from Jay Leno that ticked me off recently:
"This week the French soldiers have showed up in Afghanistan. Figures - just like the French to show up after the hard work has been done."
It just bothers me that people forget that the USA was only fighting in that war for 2 effing years.  The rest of the world had already been fighting for longer than the total USA involvement.  And even then they only fought because they were personally attacked, not because there were countries being destroyed and millions of people being murdered.

Apologies for the rant.
It was a joke, but now I cant help myself.

I know it was only a matter of time till someone made a surrender joke, and I was not directing any of the rant towards you kmarion.  Just strange how surrender and french have become synonymous, given that not only did Italy surrender, twice, but also declared war on the enemy of whoever they surrendered to.

Anyway the documentary is due to air within a month which is why it got a brief mention.  Channel 4 bizarrely chose spend some of their 30 second headlines/advert on ITV just before the news talking about the claims but dropped it from the show.  Good tactic, they tricked at least one viewer into watching the news all the way through

I'd still like to watch it, and tbh if it did happen I would think it more likely unintentional if the order did in fact fail to arrive on time than a deliberate policy not to kill Bin Laden.

Or maybe they wanted him dead, but didn't want the French to get the credit...

Nope.  Clinton had a chance to kill him twice before 9/11 and didn't.
Back when he wasn't America's most wanted man.

I think they history of wars between the Italian and French are pretty balanced. I can think of at least 3 times the French have surrendered to them, going back to the Gallic Wars.
Edit: I found this while looking for the names of the wars..lol

Modern France aside, the French deserve a bit more respect, historically, than Americans popularly allow them.

You'll love this.  Not that I support all the surrender monkey crap thrown at the French, but that is pretty funny (although quite possible not true).

This pro-america vs. anti-america is getting a bit old, actually. Can we ever just debate something and leave the whole AMERICA ROX/SUX thing out of it?
I could post something about a puppy orphanage in Alaska, and someone would turn it into an Iraq discussion.
If it wasn't for the Iraq war the United States would have more money with which to take care of abandoned animals such as puppies

Had toasties for breakfast, tinned Alaskan Salmon incidently...wait a minute...tinned puppies?  Hmm could be a solution to the problem

Was he not funded by the US Military at one point (before 9/11 obviously)? Also if the French did have the oppertunities to kill\capture why didnt they keep an eye on him so they could bring him in right now?

We had proposed apprehending Bin Laden early on to try him for crimes committed in Saudi Arabia, but the Saudi government chose not to pursue the charges, for fear of setting off a rebellion.

At one point in time, Osama was a very popular figure in the Islamic World.  He was still this popular in the late 90s, and we had no interest in making a martyr out of him.

In hindsight, yes, we should have apprehended him, but Bush made plenty of security blunders before 9/11.  He let John Ashcroft weaken our intelligence agencies in the early months of his presidency.  So, 9/11 was the result of a series of mistakes, not just one and not just by one president.

He was supposedly funded and trained by the CIA during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Many of the weapons used by the Taliban in the current conflict are reportedly the same weapons sold to Afghanistan during that war... talk about coming back around to bite you in the ass.

I'm sure there were rules of engagement issues regarding why France didn't get him without authorisation from the boys upstairs, perhaps if he'd attacked French embassies in Africa they'd have been more keen to bump him off when they had the chance but as they were contracted to the Americans perhaps they just wanted to play it by the book and not risk repercussions? Keeping an eye on someone however is easier said than done.
