How to extract images of soldiers from BFHQ

What you will need:

1) Winrar

2) Paint Shop Pro (You can download 30-day free trial from here)

3) Extension Changer

4) DDS Viewer

Install all these.

Let's get started!

nVidia has released DDS plug-in for adobe photoshop and paint shop pro. (I will cover paint shop pro.) Unfortunately, the newest version of this plug-in (When writing this 7.83) doesn't work with PSP, so you will have to download older working version 6.6.

Installation

Download the working plug-in from above and start the installation. When installation asks for the directory of the plug-in click "Change" and browse to your PSP folder. (C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro XI) After the installation the needed files are found in Plug-Ins sub-folder. (C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro XI\Plug-Ins)

PSP XI plug-ins are located by default in PlugIns folder, so we will need to specify the Plug-Ins folder manually. Start PSP, go to File --> Preferences --> File Locations. Select Plug-Ins from the File Types list, click Add and browse to the PSP Plug-Ins folder. (C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI\Plug-Ins) Make sure that "Use Sub-Folders" is checked. Click OK. Restart PSP and File --> Open. If you can find *.dds from the Files of Type list, the installation was succeed.

Extracting the images from BF2

Now we need to find the pictures of soldiers from BF2. Go to C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\BF2. There find the file Client_menu.zip. Open it with Winrar and inside it browse to External/FlashMenu/images/soldiers. There you will see files like 9_1_USPIS_92FS.png. Now these are the images used in BFHQ.

The file says it's *.png but actually it's *.dds file. Now go one folder backwards, so you can see the soldiers folder again. Select the folder and press Alt+E. Now select destination where you wish to extract the images. Close winrar and go to the folder where you extracted these images. Now the files are *.png and we need to change them all to dds. For this we will use Extension Changer. Select all the files and right click one and select "Edit the extension". Type "dds" into the field and click change.

Now all the images should be dds. And because you installed DDS Viewer you can see the thumbnails of the images. (If you can't see thumbnails, you will need to right click anywhere in the folder except any images, and click Show --> Preview images)

Opening a DDS

Now open any of the files in PSP. (I will use 9_4_eurif_hk53a3.dds) PSP may ask about Mip Maps. Click No. Now you got the image, but it is too stretched in height. (Like this.)  Click the image in PSP so it's active and press Shift+S. Now resize window will pop up. In Pixel Dimensions select Pixels from the drop down list. Width should be 512 and height 1024. Near the bottom there should be "Lock Aspect Ratio", untick it.

Now change the height to 712 (so it will say after pixel dimensions 100% x 70 %) and click OK. Now it looks better, just like in BFHQ! Now File --> Save as... and select extension you want. (png, jpg, jpeg etc)

Tadaa!

I am Finnish so sometimes I had to make raw translations from Finnish windows to English windows. (So I just guessed what it might be in English.) Also if you have something to say about my English go on. Also any feedback is welcome. (My first guide! )

I was gonna say that

Seems a bit long winded when you can go to BF2S wiki and right click-save image as...

But you can't find all the things from wiki. (I.E. EU medic holding medi pack.)

Hmm yes... I can't beat that. (This is useless now?)

Edit: Dammit tried to edit my previous post but accidentally quoted.
