Interesting. We all knew it was coming in our lifetime, building structures on the Moon that is, but how far do you think it will go? Is it feasable or possible to have a small town or even a society on the Moon? That would be further in the future obviously, if at all but what do you guys think?

I can see scientific research bases, but not communities, for a range of reasons.

How long could researchers live in the bases though. I mean, wouldnt they need some rugged gear to combat the elements. And its not like the Moon can be cultivated so supplies would need to be brought.

sort of.. its all about knowledge.. i mean i dont really think the moon is made of cheese.. i just still cant get over the classic jokes associated with it.. on a more serious level if we did colonize the moon we better brush up on our solar and other alternative power sources.. the moon just seems to close.. its like moving out of your parents house to live above the garage kinda deal

The biggest restriction on time would probably be physiological, relating to the effects of weightlessness.  But yes, between the cost of the equipment, shipping of supplies, and high changeover rates, it would likely be an expensive endeavour to say the least.

we're whalers on the moon!
we carry a harpoon!
but there are no whales,
so we tell tall tales,
and sing a whaling tune!

They BETTER put an amusement park on the moon!!!

lol i was thinking that cause i saw that episode today

On a more serious note I'm sure I've read stuff a long time ago about lower gravity weakening your bones over a prolonged period of time.  If thats true then I guess it may have implications if people ever intend to travel back to the earth.

In the future The Moon will be the ultimate prison!!!!!!

I SENTENCE YOU TO LIVE ON THE MOON FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!!!

So there is going to be a society alright!!!!

It´s gonna be a society of scum and H4x0rs!!!! And yes, Cannabis is going to be legal there!!!!
But you must try to grow it on the surface of the moon by yourself...
No one is going to escape, they will stay there and watch down on us players.
No guards, who the fuck would like to guard on the moon, what would they guard BTW???
They would have to survive by doing all the work by themselves!!!!

That is the future of the moon!!!!!!

And everyone must agree with me because i want you to do it!!!!

A cool idea but highly unlikely for many many years. I think NASA just wants to be the first ones to have "homes" on the moon, and I'm guessing they'll be used as vacation spots for the super rich, once the space-jet program is fully functioning.

You thought getting out of Camp Delta was hard.... just wait until you get shipped to Moon Camp Alpha without a trial!  How much do you think a lawyer will charge to make a visit that far?

Physiological problems posed by being in space will have to be overcome before we consider sending civilian colonists to other planets/moons. Need the gravity, need the right amount of radiation, need certain levels of bacteria and you need to be able to protect yourself from other hazards posed by space. Losing a ship is one thing...an entire colony is quite different.

As a first step toward spreading sharia law to the new proposed moon settlement the Islamic people took the first step in finding the moon in the sky, or may be not...
Moon Sighted on Nov. 26
Dr. S. A. Zahir in his article "Moon Sighting for Ramadan" in November 2000 issue has stated that there are no chances of sighting moon on November 26 anywhere in India. But moon was sighted in Kerala, Rippenpet in Shimoga District and some other parts in Karnataka on November 27. Dr. Zahir should clarify this discrepancy.

That is completely inaccurate.

Here's how it will really happen:

We're whalers on the moon!
We carry a harpoon!
But there ain't no whales so we tell tall tales
And sing a whaling tune!

I won't be testing the 1st prototype moon community since I don't want to be the first person to die on the moon.

But let's start drilling for oil and burying our hazardous waste there immediately! I believe we can do to the moon what we have done to the earth in a 100th of the time!

Somebody didn't listen in Physics classes. The Moon has a full 1/6G of gravity, so it's not weightlessness at all, merely low gravity.

Also, they wouldn't legalise cannabis on the moon. Burning ANYTHING would use up precious oxygen.

I predict they'll simply build the bases as geodesic domes buried under a layer of regolith (the proper term, because 'soil' means something full of life, it's not on Earth, and it's thicker than dust but not quite rock) to protect against the solar wind.
We have the technology, it's just a matter of getting the stuff up there. And from the moon, it's a short step to Mars, where we can start terraforming. (Or, for a quick and dirty approach, we can start terraforming FIRST, by repeatedly nuking the icecaps with multi-megaton warheads to get the water airborne. Yet another use for nukes, along with launching spacecraft, digging holes, damming rivers, carving harbours, dropping on people you don't like, and creating post-apocalyptic wastelands for Mel Gibson to drive around in.)
