"Airline pilots will be allowed to fly until they turn 65 instead of the current mandatory retirement age of 60 under a proposal to be announced Tuesday by Federal Aviation Administrator Marion Blakey."

I agree with raising the age, as long as they continue to keep up their required medical status, and prove then can still do their job, which is already monitored anyway.

same as with cars, the older the drivers get the more often they must have a check-up. The dutch government here wants to force old drivers to take a test every year, nothing wrong with that imo

testing every old person every year though would cost loads.

Ok, but here is the real reason as I know it.

For the US :

The Airline Pilots Association (union) is against this because of money.  Pilots pay union fees to be in the union obviously, but only up to a certain point.  Once a pilot reaches a certain salary range, the due is not increased.  Essentially, the union can bring in two new pilots when the older pilot retires, hence more money.  As for the training, pilots have to pass sim training every six months anyway.

For Europe :

The age in Europe was raised to 65, mainly because of a pilot shortage and because pilots pay in to a government pension...i.e. more money for the government.  Plus, Europe has much tougher medical standards then the US.

It is all a matter of legality.  Since the FAA and JAA, under the UN, follow the same rules so when a foreign carrier flies to another country, they are not in violation of their rules.  As of now, if a European pilot over the age of 60 flies to the US, he is in violation of FAA rules.  It is my belief because of this, the age will be raised to 65 in the US.

As a side note, about 10 years ago or so, it was legal for Air France pilots to have a glass of wine with their dinner.  When they landed in the US, they were in violation of the FAA's alcohol policy.

They already do simulator checks every six months anyway.  The biggest issue I see for airlines is salary.

Retirement age is getting to be a complex issue in lots of fields. Lawyers in large law firms are typically required to "retire" at 65 even if they are still bringing in clients and doing good work. I know several lawyers who were forced to "retire" at 65, so they just took their pension and went to work at another law firm. As people stay healthier longer, the kind of issue the airline industry is facing will happen in every industry.

Stereotyping an entire Race into a negative light could be considered so.

I think it's a good thing that they are raising the retirement age to 65. It helps to aleveiate the shortage of pilots, plus if I ever graduate from college, seems like I never will, and get a job with an airline I'll have 5 extra years to fly commercially, and there's nothing wrong with that. By the way usmarine2007, who do you work for? I know it's aviation oriented but I've never known and always been curious.

Raising the age to 65 is a bit iffy.  I'm not entirely comfortable with it (our CAA uses mostly FAA rules for reasons of commonality, so it affects us too) but provided they undergo testing to ensure their faculties are still up to scratch, I guess its okay.

Yes it is racist, but theres an element of truth to it at least for new arrivals.  Takes a while for them to get used to different driving conditions.

Why would anyone who is a pilot/wants to be a pilot support this move?
Being a pilot means being in a union, and its all based on seniority.  You only move up as people ahead of you leave.  That 61 year guy who just can't hang it up continues to tie up a prime flying route, or prevents the hiring of an eager young dreamer.

It's kind of a I was here first deal. I don't blame the older pilots not wanting to retire, I know if I was in that position I wouldn't want to retire. Pilots can find jobs they just have to know where to look and who to talk to, it's all about connections now.
