You realise the amount of money they get from the public is tiny... its only 25 million, my mum atm needs 300 million to turn around her area of NHS services. 25 million is not worth fussing about, have you considered she is also the queen of other countries and it might effect them too?Bell wrote:
It's hard to equate a flag to a person. They die for there homeland and the ideals/people back home. If the Queen was assasinated, the british way of life is hardly going to collapse, if the American flag was torn down from the whitehouse or congress then the American way of life is certainly in for a change. People come and go, the US flag has been there since the dawn of that nation (bar the slight alterations to stars). Queen has been here some 80 odd years? As a practical thing, she isnt needed, despite our complaints, eventhough they do get fed and watered in total luxury, compaired to our health service, military and school systems, its chicken feed what is paid to them, but I'd sleep a little better at night if that money went into something that benifit those less fortunet than myself, not just those born into a position of privileage. It's an expense we indulge in for no good reason. Maybe its for those who want some sort of connection to our past empire? Personally, its something I find no just reason for other than its always been this way.......=OBS= EstebanRey wrote:

British Monarchy = 829
Fighting for the Monarchy has been around a hell of a lot longer than your flag. I don't get your point?
My flag? No, I'm a Scot if u look to your left. My point is, the symbol of the American flag differs to the american people, how the Brits perceive there monarchy as a symbol of there nation. Granted, the monarchy has been around longer than the US flag, but going back to what I just said, the Flag has different meaning than any random royal. And the flag is constant, a monarch can only last a life time, the flag has been the same for 5 odd generations.=OBS= EstebanRey wrote:

That gets away from what I am getting at though, to answer what you originally stated 'Plenty of the USA soldiers take bullets for the Stars n Stripes so what's the difference'? That flag represents that nation and its people/way of life, the Royal family doesnt represent the UK and its people.
Edit: Just noticed Vilham's post.
Agreed, in the grand scheme of things, 25million isnt a lot, but for example my local NHS hospital was build for 20 million, and its hundreds of thousands in debt, diverting that cash to them for example would solve atleast one of the problems the NHS suffers. That to me is worth more than keeping any Royal on the thrown. Secondly, effect them how? She was in Australia not so long ago, she holds no more sway over there than here, personally I dont see any real reason for keeping the monarchy these days. I know there is reason's for it, but none that really shout out to me keep them. Perhaps I am biased though, when she was in Scotland a few years back, the RAF flew three of there fighters in a loop round this area in display formation, my nephew was terrified and I got no sleep that night Superficial I know but on a more serious note, I think the best option would be to hold a referndum.

You do realise that if we are talking in the amount of times your flag to our monarch has changed, you actually have more changes.
Alfred the Great being the first leader of all free englishmen back in 871, since the there have been 65 monarchs (67 including the beckets) = 17.5 yeah between each monarch on average
Since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, there have been 26 flag changes = a change every 9 or so years, rounded up.
Just a little fact i'd point out
Flags arent forever either.

Which I mentioned in a previous post (still the majority of said changes are alterations to stars depending on state's joining and what have you) .Shem wrote:

Yeah and the majority of monarch changes has been due to death. Monarch's change, flags change i don't see the problem in fighting for your Queen over fighting for your flag. It's just a symbol of what Britain/USA means to you. I'm sure there are Americans that prefer the Confederate flag (see other thread) just as their is British people who don't liek the Queen. Just because you don't like her doesn't mean others don't.Bell wrote:

I'd love to see how this argument would go down in the 40s during WW2, you'd have probably been shot!
