Dystopia = a corrupted or destroyed vision of utopia, a 'state in which the conditions of life are extremely bad as from deprivation or oppression or terror'. Post-apocalyptic fiction without the apocalypse. Neuromancer is a nice example, the Matrix I guess would be a sci-fi equivalent, most of the Matrix's ideas being drawn from Neuromancer. At the time it was written Watchmen was basically a dystopian take on super heroes. Take the idea of the shining knight on the hill and rip all the skeletons and scandals out of the closet. V for Vendetta is set in a dystopia (Margret Thatcher's England on steroids is the intended allusion). Nineteen-Eighty-Four is the big one, Orwell, Huxley and a few others spawned the idea.

Ah okay, it's just I understood what a dystopian society is like, but the cyberpunk threw me. Cyberpunk I looked up and basically means like cyberneticly enhanced (in this case superheroes).
I suppose Neo would be classed as a cyberpunk in a dystopian society.
I've now idea what the watchmen is like, I'm trying to avoid all references to it until I see the movie. because until I started seeing trailers I had no idea about the Watchmen to begin with.
