I still don't get why the team bothers. Men's soccer is the 10th most popular sport (9th if you merge college and pro football) in this country. It's a European thing.

It's not a European thing.

It's a European, Asian, African and South American thing. That's the vast majority of the world.
And where exactly did the imperial powers of Europe colonize? That would be the reason for its spread.
Almost everywhere. Although the game is just as popular (if not more so) in countries that have never been colonised by Europeans. Japan has never been colonised, yet is one of the biggest markets for football.

Your argument doesn't hold a lot of water, because North America was colonised by Europeans, yet football is not very popular there and because many countries not colonised by Europeans now watch a lot of football.

I read somewhere that the 'Soccer mom' thing was going to ensure millions of kids will grow up playing football in the states?
Personally I find Soccer as boring as American Football.

Bunch of over paid nacies dancing around a field for 90 minutes with no score or a sport with absolutely no flow and commercial breaks every 10min's  are equally as boring.
I prefer the Australian, Irish or mixed rules football. Practically full contact, no padding, lots of scoring and extremely fast. Now thats entertainment!!

The popularity in countries that were not colonized is exactly what they are now hoping for: people to jump on the bandwagon and make it popular.

North America, at least the United States, doesn't especially like Europeans for reasons stemming back beyond the Revolution. It's like the "color"/"colour" arguement, this country is attempting to be different from Europe and their standards.

And Canada?

In South America they have a lot of the same issues with the Spainish I believe.

it is because beckham has become a world round icon that sells things
he's more of an athletic model than a footballer now as the creative sectors sucked him in
the American teams want him because he will generate them money, lots and lots of money, they don't care about his football skills too much

would that be because your too tubby to keep up? Soccer = mans sport. Everything else = waste of time. 'Cept that basketball. When two good teams get together its good thing. But hey, to each his own. Just after having played soccer, tennis, football, baseball, and frisbee golf i choose the soccer.

yes rugby is omitted because thats just assault in the form of a game. As for Beckham, I hope that he raises the profile of soccer here in the States but even Pele couldn't do it in the 70's in the old US league.

I guess we will see. But I think a lot of people are missing out on the business aspect of this. Beckham is huge worldwide. So why not open another market for brand Beckham in the states?

What about the Chicago Fire? It's like a pun or something. To be honest, I don't believe I've ever heard any team names, just the city or whichever.

Soccer was awesome for me when I was a kid. I didn't join any teams, but it was great fun for when dodgeball was shut down for the day.

I'm 44, and started competition football at 7, so I guess I'm a bit biased.

Easily the most popular sport IN THE WORLD, you know, all that bit that's NOT the USA (oh that's right, the rest of the world doesn't count).

There are lots of games that are technically as difficult, but most of them require expensive equipment to play. Football is played in the barrios of Rio, the outback of Australia, the poor desert countries of Africa, acros the breadth of Asia, and in the resort cities of Monaco, France, Switzerland et al. EVERYONE, rich or poor plays football.

But some seem to think its a dull sport. If this is you, do you have a sporting background? Is there any physical skill you have developed which gives you an insight on how difficult and skilful the game can be?

I may not understand the finer points of Ice hockey, but I can appreciate the breathtaking skating and stick skills they exhibit.

Personally, I think Mr Beckham is outrageously overrrated, but I don't know much about marketing. I do, however, know a bit about football (I went to WC in Germany last year).

Jogo Bonito.
