That's a hell of alot of money to kick a ball? Does anyone else see this as a huge waste?(Especially in America)
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/11/sport … ckham.html

Soccer, not popular here, Beckham not Popular, Posh Spice... not really popular here.

I'm not debating what the better sports are, just the stupidity of dropping this kind of money in a hole.

I guess posting in this forum is impossible without it not going politcal. I was just curios if anyone actually believed this kind of investment would payoff.

Not really a waste in my opinion.
It's all about the revenue he will generate for LA Galaxy in just shirt sales not to mention the amount of publicity football will receive while ever he plays, I personally think that his departure from Real Madrid and arrival at Galaxy will spark a huge boost in interest and income for all football clubs in America which can only be a good thing.

The amount of money he'll pull from ticket sales and merchandise alone will cover the cost for LAG.

Sure initially people will go and see what 250 million bought, then it will fade.

Sure in a country that sold tickets to watch soccer.

Major League Soccer has lost more than $350 million since its founding, according to a report by BusinessWeek in 2004.

It's not tax money, but I agree it's a waste.  He's not that good.  I can think of 10 English players better than him.  He is a great free kicks and corners shooter, nothing else.

Actually he's down as a notable former player. Why is that?

It's all about publicity. Beckham has a very high global profile, not so much in the states, but most other countries. It could pay off, but I'm not expecting any miracles.

those 250 million dollars are for a 5-year contract. so it's only 50 million dollars a year - or just about 1 million dollar a week..

a lot of celebrities makes more than that, working a hell of a lot less for it..

Must have been a mistake that's been corrected.  He's in the list of notable players now.

A million dollars a week, that's what he's getting paid.  IMO he's not worth it - he's not even good enough for the national team these days - but if he brings in more sponsorship than that, well it's a good deal I guess.

That's just a transfer fee, he'll be earning upwards of 75k a week if he's getting the same amount as he used to for Real/Utd.

Actually it's a five year contract at $10,000,000 a year as a paid salary with the potential to earn another $40,000,000 in sponsorship and franchising etc...

$50 mill salary
$200 mill adverts etc
------------------------
$250 mill total over five years
