Many, if not most people believe blindly in what they have been taught growing up. What they have seen, heard and told from the community, is reality and truth to them. As many muslims (in extremist groups) live under the illusion that Jihad and extermination of the great Satan from the West is the truth and the right thing to do, so do we also live under the illusion that our Western culture, law and civilisation is the only correct and allowed way of living.

The peoples level of reaction is almost directly comparable to the "extremity" of the subculture (aka branch of). "Sympathy-suicides" are something that also happen in the western culture. It only takes e.g. a dead rockstar. For muslim extremists, the rockstar was Saddam.
