OK, having just finished high school and having to decide on what to study at university, I just want to find out what goes on in the other countries around the world.

Here in Australia, the two most popular degrees for undergraduate study (having just finished high school) are medicine and commerce/law combined degree. The reasons for choosing medicine are obviously status and income (not alot in Australia actually) and for commerce/law, you can go into corporate law, management, finance, economics etc.

So just want to know what's the deal in other countries, is medicine just as popular? Or is science or engineering more preferred? Or do most people want to study business and finance?

You can study most subjects at most universities in NZ, though all NZ's medical doctors come from one of two universities; Otago and Auckland.  Most Universitys here have something they're good at/known for.  My local university (Canterbury, www.canterbury.ac.nz) is quite big on engineering and related sciences.  The last high-profile thing I heard of was a couple of Masters students preparing for the first trans-tasman UAV flight.

Me, I'm doing a BSc. in computer science.  It should be called software engineering as theres not really a lot of "sciencey" content.

Medicine is very popular here. So are finacial based degrees. Art degrees are less common. Science degrees are somwhere in the middle.

Im also doing BSc in Computer Science. Theres a lot of maths in my degree.

Do you know what kind of career you want? That's how you need to decide. If you have no idea, then just take the undergraduate stuff. But you have to have some sort of idea of "what you want to be when you grow up", right? Or, just take medicine, and find a cure for herpes. Then you will be a friggin millionare.

Bah, don't go to Canterbury University.
The main NZ Universities are generally:

Otago: Medicine/Alcoholism
Canterbury: Engineering
Victoria, (Wellington): Law/Politics
Auckland: Rich people and scholorship winners. Mostly Commerce.

It all depends on what you want to do. Honestly if you do something just because it's what most people are doing then you are going to loose interest and end up wasting a lot of time and money.

I'm doing a Law and Political Science double-degree by the way.

edit: ok - thought it worth to point out, in the UK "business studies" and "economics" are considered by most an easy way to get a degree...

In Ireland the top degrees are Medicine, Pharmacy, Psychiatry, Veterinary Medicine and Actuary (Actuary requires 600 Leaving Certificate points: the maximum achievable!!!).
Law, Engineering, Science, IT follows.
Then Business, Economics, etc.
Arts is bottom of the pile.

If you want a course that will have you in high demand, Engineering. Apparently there are very few qualified engineers coming through the system in Australia. But as a lot of previous posters said, do what you want to do. I did Science.

Thanks everyone for your reply, I'm looking into doing Medicine at University of Sydney, however I'm a bit concerned that the course trains you to follow procedures and not use your own creativity and innovation to solve problems. Is this really what studying medicine is like? Is there much creativity and innovation in medical practice?

No innovation in actual medicine, it could cost someone their lives. There is innovation in the Science of medicine though. Just depends which one you are going for.
