There's more room for 'confusion' within our current binary system.

To see why, try this:

launch windows Calculator and make sure it's in Scientific mode (in the View menu)

now enter '1' and click the +/- button to make it '-1'

then click the radio button that says Bin next to it (this converts the value into binary)

you should get '1111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111'

now click the Dec radio button, to convert back into decimal

what value do you get displayed?

It's not -1 is it?

Ooh! I was thinking about ternary systems just the other day. Wouldn't -1, 0 and 1 be better than 0, 1 and 2 ? That way we'd have a sensible way to represent negative numbers.
Good point. That's called balanced ternary and would be very usefull. Computers often use unsigned operands though and it would be complicated to use balanced ternary for some and normal ternary for others. In simpler implementations there can be no doubt that a balanced ternary solution would be best, but overall it might be too complex to implement efficiently in a CPU using signed and unsigned operands.

-1 would be to easily mixed up with 1 etc
I see no reason why that should happen.
Far to easy for error to occur, and the fact the prefix on the number may be overlooked (more so human error) and the '-' having to become a destinguished value from/like a number without, E.g -1 differing from 1.  The '-' would need to be destinguished just as the 1 would

You don't get human error within a CPU. The prefix would not be represented on the silicon as a -. It will be handled through logical expressions that best suit the architecture.

I have absolutely no idea what the past 10 posts mean
But I think your saying 32 bit is better than 64 bit (at least right now), right?

No they are going the long way to say get 64...lol
You have nothing to lose with 64, it runs both 32 and 64 now.

Thank you
Was gonna ask this question myself...

OK, having thought about this a bit, my advice to the op would be to opt for 64bit Vista. Keep XP on you system and install Vista onto a second HDD or partition - then, as drivers and more 64bit software gets released you can slowly migrate over.

You guys should realize that 99 percent of most tech sites and magazines say to not upgrade as of yet.

Hence my advice to continue running XP and to install vista on 2nd HDD...

32bit whether or not you have 64bit/32bit processor.. it ll run on either, work better and is more compatible with current software

But then, if he's only going to get one or the other, that would mean he'll have to buy the 64bit version in the not too distant future...

Buy what you got.

If you have a 64 bit processor get 64 bit.  If you have a 32, then buy 32.
