Bulgaria and Romania join the EU

So how do we EU folk feel about their accession to the EU? Both extremely impoverished. One infested with corruption. Are we ready for the influx of migrants? What are your feelings?

Personally I'm committed to the EU project and I hope we can include all Europeans in the EU at some point, so that we can help them up to our standard of living.

What "EU taxes" exactly are You referring to?

Well, if I remember correctly, all countries get more back from the EU than they pay in - all but France, UK and Germany. Thus, I don't think that the EU is such a bad thing - except, of course, for France, UK and Germany.

Also, I'd be interested to know how the EU killed the sugar industry? Means Your country couldn't put ridiculous taxes on foreign sugar anymore to protect the domestic production? Well that means that sugar in Your country became cheaper for everybody, right?

I remember when Austria joined the EU in the middle of the 90ies: salt prices dropped to one third, sugar and flour dropped to half its pre-EU price. There were of course more price drops, but these I remember best; I couldn't believe my own eyes when I entered shops and supermarkets the first "day(s) after"...

Thus, be patient... as long as Your country gets more than it pays, You shouldn't complain.

AFAIK they are still producing salt, sugar and flour in Austria... only their margin dropped

There was something with sugar production qoutes, now they started a restructuration and one was liquidated. The sugar companies get compensation anyways.. I'm not against EU, since without them nothing would happen here.. (we need a dictator)

It may be a rough time for all the countries involved. But I feel good knowing that my tax money is giving someone a lift up. For every Benefit scam their are 10 people who need it. Immigrants work in my town and they are already part of the community, well integrated and hard working. Ireland got a lift 20 odd years ago and now she is flourishing its now time for her and others to pass on the favor.

Actually, to answer the original question - yes, I do think it's a good thing. For both Bulgaria and Romania, and for all the other countries in the EU - a bigger EU is an economically stronger EU.

Oh, and as for the 'they'll come over here and steal all our jobs' argument - (a) that's not a bad thing and (b) the Romanian language is far closer to the romantic languages than it is to english, so most of them will go to southern european countries.
