Well, for anyone who has Battlefield 2142 you should know by now that it's a DVD. Why??? This is because DVD's have more space on them and EA Games was able to fit all the stuff into one disc instead of three like for Battlefield 2, but is this really worth it? Causing people to go out and buy DVD drives?? Let's hear your thoughts. Oh and also: will a DVD be damaged if put into a CD drive?

If your computer doesn't have one, it's probably too old to play it at decent settings anyway.  Go buy a new computer or a DVD drive.  All upcoming games are gonna be DVD's.

Do you really want to install 5 discs?

No, I didn't think so.

A CD drive just wont read a DVD.

Its 2006... about to be 2007.  If you don't have a DVD drive by now, I'd suggest suing the guy that sold you your PC.

Agree with the above.  A burner can be picked up for 40 U.S. bucks shipped.  It's hard to imagine someone having a PC suitable for BF2 or 2142 and them not have a DVD drive.

There were 3 Discs for BF2?... i only have one and it works fine o.0.

But no the CD player won't do it any damage, just may not be able to play if your CD player doesn't have DVD reading abilities.

No, just one, but other games have come out on both CD and DVD, and the CD versions is ~5 discs whereas the DVD version is 1. (My example is NWN2)

I hate these morons that think insist that lots of people still have CD drives

just 2 months ago there was a thread in the steam powered forums from some idiot ranting on about how Valve is evil selling Half-Life 2 on a DVD. Then the mods dropped by and pwned him with the Valve hardware survey which showed that 94% of steam users has a DVD drive, while only a few people have a video card this side of the year 2000

It's all about profits. The small number of sales they will lose by offering DVD only will be more than offset by the additional coding and testing to make sure the install works correctly for both versions. Plus there are additional production and packaging costs for two versions.

I'm not opposed to DVD only at all. In fact, it took quite a long time before DVD versions of games were even available in my opinion.

I work for a software company that provides software to the tax & accounting industry and we tried to push DVD only just this last year. It's a pain supoprting both. But, our clients weren't ready for it. And when our client pay tens of thousands of dollars on our products instead of $50 it makes business sense to not make it a permanent switch just yet.

Oh, for crying out loud... Get a freaking $30 DVD+-RW from your local computer store and stfu.  It's 3 days away from 2007, if you don't have a DVD drive, well shit on you, because things move on.

You think you've got it bad... Back in 1998, I paid $900 US dollars so that I could write master CDs, so I could send them to the producer without huge studio fees, and to send large image files without dealing with other proprietary medias.  That was lightning fast 2x drive, and it took 34 minutes to burn a full CD!

DVD's are sexier anyways. $60 for DVD writer + Lightscribe (Which owns by the way... Most of my burnt cd's have naked pictures of my girlfriend on them)
