By the same token, I could say the terrorists were the Republicans' greatest asset. Before 9/11, Bush was a president who many outwardly ridiculed for being so stupid. After 9/11, a tremendous amount of patriotism and fear consumed our culture. People who would normally act rationally in the possibility of invading Iraq were still paranoid about terrorism, despite the fact that we conquered the Taliban.Major_Spittle wrote:
Yeah, I remember the terrorists doing the same thing when Bush got elected and the Republicans took back the House. Doh.
Maybe they said they got the Dems elected because, well, they got the Dems elected. If the war was going great and a thriving Democracy was in place in Iraq, would the Dems have got elected? What is the alternative the Democrats support (leaving) and what is it the terrorists want the US to do in Iraq (leave). Now if the Democrats supported carpet bombing the region and the terrorist said this I would laugh it off.
I say the terrorists were the Democrats greatest asset in the last election. The cowarding liberals care more about taking down Bush than succeeding in defeating the terrorists. I would say that puts the Dems and the terrorists on the same side of a major issue that both of them put above all else, gaining power.
All the Republicans had to do was link terrorism to Saddam to get public support for invading Iraq. For a short time, this link worked. As people slowly figured out that this was bullshit, the WMD's idea came into play. With the people already ambivalent about invasion, they didn't need much persuasion to support the attack at that point.
So, terrorists could be seen as the greatest ally of the Republicans, because they provide the perfect scapegoat for schemes of intervention. In addition to this, when you have terrorists like the ones mentioned in this thread publicly voicing their support for Democrats, this starts to make people react against the Democrats as seen in this thread. So, again, this is beneficial to Republicans.
For a humorous parallel, watch the South Park episode about the city considering a change in their flag to represent diversity. The KKK at first voices their disdain for the flag, but later, they realize that supporting the flag change will make people question the change itself because of their support. I believe the terrorists are probably doing the exact same thing.
If you know that you're publicly hated by a group, and you want to harm that group as much as possible, you do things that misdirect your enemies. Misdirection has been a key component to the tactics of both the terrorists and of our own government.....
