Hrm... where to begin...

First off, with the exception of some extremely rare cases, the words are not offensive to the kids, but to the parents.

Second, neither EA nor Punkbusters are forcing the language rules, they just provide the option, and the person spending money to lease the server makes the rules.  It's their buck, it's their house, and they're entitled to their opinions of language decency, no matter how you or I feel about it.

And yeah... it's a bit stupid even though I often moderate my language, depending on the setting, not because I have any problem with the words, but just to be polite to those who do...  or in general to be appropriate to the setting.  "Fuck", "shit", and "cunt" are no more appropriate in a boardroom than "wassaaaaap", or "hey bro... how's it hangin'?".  Of course... at a George Carlin show...     *grins*.

And of course the simple argument against profanity rules is this: all of these words, every single one, is just another string of syllables which means *exactly* the same thing as some other string of syllables which does not fall under those rules...  and in many cases, the exact string of syllables is acceptable in another use.

Some examples...

"We fucked", unnaceptable.  "I rode her until she whailed like a banshee", acceptable (well... it'd get you past the censors).
"I've gotta take a shit", unnaceptable.  "I've got to take a dump, it's knocking on the back door, and I can tell it's gonna be wet", acceptable.
...and with greater severity of the language censor...
"Nice ass", unacceptable.  "MAN, look at that caboose.  I'd like to hitch my train up to that for an overnight ride", acceptable.
"I got kicked in the balls", unacceptable.  "I got whacked so hard in the groin, I don't know that I need that vasectomy any more.  Man... they hurt worse than that time back in high school when that hottie Beth let me feel her up, and things were getting heavy, and my mom drove up and I had to send her out the back door.  I've never seen a shade of blue like that before", acceptable.

In each an every case, I garauntee you that the latter gave you a FAR more vivid picture of what I was describing....  but not a single word would be censored (unless of course it was some big-time general content censoring... kind of like they did back in the early days of TV... but hell, Mary Tyler Moore had a hard time getting away with capri pants on the Dick Van Dyke show... and Genie had to cover up her belly button).

And then of course, some words are ok in the right context, wrong in another.

"He's a dick", unacceptable. "He is Dick", acceptable.
"I got hit in the balls", unacceptable (well... used to be). "I went to the driving range, and hit some balls", acceptable.
"I've got a bick cock", unacceptable.  "I've got a big fighting cock", acceptable (given a human censor, and the context is an activity where you put two roosters in a ring, and try and get them to kill each other).

Either way, it's all pretty senseless.  Of course, it goes into this argument...    how come it's legal to pay a man to beat the living dog shit out of another guy (boxing), but not legal to pay a woman to make love to the guy (prostitution)?

I've complained about this in the past.  I was kicked for saying "I'm gettin my ass handed to me".  Also kicked for saying, "lets get that bitch" even though I said it in squad chat.  The only two people in that squad were me and my RL buddy.

Just stay away from those limpdick servers.

You can say the words ASS and BITCH on PUBLIC radio.  They do it all the time.

What I can't understand for the life of me is why they bleep out words that have to do with marijuana like "indo".  Snoop Dog's radio edit has him saying "rolling down the street smokin smokin sippin on gin and juice."  Then I turn on 96 rock and hear a song called "Cocaine" however that word is not edited.  Clearchannel are a bunch of self righteous fucktards.

My mother hates me hearing or seeing cussing.  She's taken games on the comp away before because of that. Luckily my dad thinks what you do, if you can see people gettin blown to hell yah you can handle a little rat cussing once or twice.

I too share the hate of the namby pamby politically correct hypocritical garbage that says "depictions horrendous acts of violence and murder in a game are alright but NONE OF THAT EVIL SWEARING"

It's up to the server admins to decide what rules they will place on their server. Don't like it? Doesn't matter. YOU aren't paying for them to run their server. Want to cuss people out all day every day? Start your own server.

8.2 - Impose "no swearing rules". As an adult playing a game rated mature (13+), I understand that the responsibility of allowing children to be exposed to coarse language is up to the guidance of the parents.

You know, not everyone who doesn't want to hear someone swear up a storm is 13. There are quite a few people I know older than I am (22), that don't like it either. Just because you don't have a problem with it, doesn't mean everyone else should have to play your way, on a third parties server.

It's only illegal for a woman to be paid for sex IF it is private. If you tape it and sell it to thousands of people then it's perfectly legal. I still don't understand that!

An extremely simplified answer is that regardless of how much politicians rant and rave about separation of church and state, the US is a Christian state at its roots.  It was religious morals that caused prostitution to be outlawed in the first place.

Pornography originally was outlawed.  The reason that it is legal now is the First Amendment.  It was successfully argued that pornography is a form of 'artful media' and thus covered.  Prostitution has never been able to make that claim.

I agree with almost everything in this thread.  The FCC is a joke.  It's ok to portray an incestous cult member that rapes handicapped children on Law & Order:SVU, but if you flash a nipple during halftime the world ends.
