As this's been revived, I find myself wondering why Carter's been mentioned so much here...

Amazingly I couldn't think of any more after those 3. Why is it that so many politicians are totally devoid of morality? Why does power corrupt like it does?
It's the nature of the human kind. The exception proves the rule.

I think it's admiration based on:
a) His resilience and commitment to his cause;
b) The fact his 'heart' is in the right place even if the means of achieving his goals were less than salubrious in the immediate aftermath of the revolution;
c) His dogged bravery in the face of overwhelming adversity, where external powers continue to try and impose their will and force Cuba to conform to their norms.

i'm not really sure dictators qualify as politicians...most politicians i know earn their office, not kill all who oppose

1. Reagan
2.  Any one who is conservative in name and deed

for all you Clinton/Carter lovers out there...every time you see "North Korea" and "Nukes" in the news or "Iran" and "Nukes" and "Ahmadinajihad"...your respect should bubble over for the two men who led the way for these scenarios

The greatest thing about Castro is that he'll kick the bucket soon

I agree his revolution may not be accommodating of everyone's lifestyle or beliefs but I do admire the man for being one of the only figures to stand up to the US' attempts to have a controlling interest in every country in the world. I don't think you have to agree with absolutely every aspect of a politicians ideology to have respect for them, i have a grudging respect for Ian Paisley (for the love of God that man can sure stick to his guns no matter how much writing is on the wall) but i agree with about zero percent of his political beliefs.

Yep anyone who can completely wreck a healthy ecconomy and that of the next 30 years (he'd borrowed HUGE amounts in the form of Uk Gilts) and has the guts to take a salary has to get some kind of respect....

That's the dumbest set of criteria I've ever seen. Just because you keep oppressing people for some ass-backwards cause doesn't make you a good man. Fidel Castro is just a stubborn old jackass who refuses to accept that Communism has failed. So many people criticize Bush for being stubborn, yet you praise Castro for basically being stubborn.
