2142 has been marked down in price everywhere I go, and it's been how long?. Bf2 on the other hand, 6 months before it came down in price, sorta speaks for itself. But besides that, I don't find 2142 to be as bad as people say, sure it's full of nubs, but since when isn't going 15-2 every round not been fun and enjoyable.

First off: BF2 is not better; it's older, it's testament to the mistakes Dice originally made...and eventually fixed.
Second: armor whores were a royal pain, and spawn raping was rampant on many servers, especially Karkand because of the design of spawn points and the map itself...and people being kill whores.
Third: Operation Clean Sweep didn't see all that much circulation. Nor did oh say, Kubra dam. Zatar was too freakin big. even full with 64 players, they still were too vast and people got fed up with it.
Fourth: I admit defeat on titan gun thing. they truly are a pain.
Fifth: Air power is now more balanced. No more banning for raping the Wake carrier. No more super chopper whores that could dominate a whole game...soloing. Teh gay, no one in real life can switch seats in a helicopter while in motion...and they prided BF2 as being realistic.
Sixth: Do a search, you'll see many people agree the G36E is a whore weapon that requires virtually no skill to use and inflicts massive damage.
Try chewing on that for a bit. But like I said, people will catch on that BF2 sucks; time will tell.
TBH I find the number of players immaterial. Call of Duty had a much smaller gaming "audience" (here, anyway). But I found that good - it created a community where practically everyone knew everyone else.

and as for BF2 being better than BF2142, that's BS. i've been playing BF2 (well i recently stopped because of 2142) almost since it came out and i just started playing 2142 last week and i can already see that 2142 is ten times better than BF2. i was shocked, i had quite a bit of fun playing it, instead of being miserable on BF2.

Aren't you BF2 players tired of standard conquest games? It is like a mix between CTF and musical chairs. It seems so abstract and almost pointless now that I have played Titan mode. I will never play BF2 again. It is a good game, but I find it a bit monotonous now-a-days.

Two different games with two different sets of appeals. Neither is better, though BF2 is more simple. If there had been no patches after 1.12 BF2 would be twice as popular anyway.
It is easier to kick the crap out of everybody on a server in 2142 though, because so many here in Oz don't seem to have adjusted to the altered movement and weapon dynamics.

When I find like 230+ servers almost ALL of them are filled with players. This from 16 servers to 64 players and that's when my clock hit like 19:00 when most people are home from school or job.
I got several 64 player servers in my favs that are almost all the time filled. Or they have 0 players at the moment. Then I several Titan 48 servers in my list to and those are either filled to the top with a few player.
Searching for normal servers I find all the other 32 servers and that's quite a lot. Almost all of them are full to for me.
So imo I belive BF2142 is actually pretty close to BF2 in the amount of players that are playing it.

I hate 64 player maps. 48 is my maximum. That is the reason I hardly stop by the BF2142 EU server.

I think its because all the previous Battlefield games have been based of real things, in most cases wars. And 2142 is just like any other game with unreal stuff that no one really wants to play. I wasn't interested in it from the beginning and I deleted the demo after 10 minutes of playing it. I have been playing the Battlefield series since the 1942 demo (freshmen year of college) and I even played that Wake Island demo for a month and a half before the actual game came out. I have every single battlefield game there is, except 2142. I'll just wait until its like $15 on eBay, then maybe I'll pick it up.
