Go Core 2 Duo. Athlon sucks right now.
I gotta agree.  I have not run an Intel chip in 9 years, however I am upgrading to a C2D.  They just kick they hell outa AMD (For now).  Price is good as well (Surprising).

I currently have the AMD 3800+ Manchester CPU... but I'm not impressed with it. At all.

I didn't buy it for gaming purposes but my Intel ran BF2 on negative FPS. I've had the CPU for around 3 - 4 months and am not liking it. I was thinking of doing either one of two things:

1. Overclock to 2.4 and buy a Zalman cooler.

2. Change the CPU to this:

Then overclock to 2.8 (ish) with again, the Zalman cooler.

Which is the better choice? I don't do a lot of things on my computer that would normally require a dual core CPU.  I spent $186 on it, and could easily sell it now with socket 939 X2's being a thing of the past now because they are hard to find now.
Sounds like you should:

Buy the cooler first and OC your current CPU and see if you like it,

If you don't buy the other CPU...
