Yes, I can get on the internet, email, xfire, enemy territory, call of duty 2.  I have uninstalled the game and tried reinstalling, and now I get a patch failed error.  I'm lost!

Sounds like a firewall issue

no one should turn off a firewall for a game, the firewall shall be configured correctly. If you start to disable FW when gaming you might as well uninstall the FW. And good luck with hack-bots after that...

WHat antivirus do you use?

It could be that the antivirus no longer recognises BF2 after patching.  You may have to go to the firewall and allow BF2.exe or whatever it is to access the internet freely after the patch.  Norton scans programs and if it finds them altered will ask you whether you want it to connect to the internet.  If you use Norton, just click yes (permit always).  If not, do it manually.

Hope it helps.
